Adios, Southwest Conference
Quick – Name the last eight members of the Southwest Conference.
Not so easy, is it?
Entering the 1994 season, the long-anticipated demise of the SWC became official. The 1994 and 1995 campaigns would be the last for the storied conference. After 80 seasons, the Southwest Conference would fold up its tents; its teams left to a new future.
Arkansas, the only Southwest member outside of the state of Texas, had defected to the Southeastern Conference in 1990. Now Texas, Texas A & M, Baylor, and Texas Tech, commencing with the 1996 season, would join the Big Eight to form the Big 12. Southern Methodist, Rice, and Texas Christian, meanwhile, would join the Western Athletic Conference. The Houston Cougars, originally set adrift to fend for itself as an independent, would eventually settle upon an affiliation with Conference USA.
Why would a conference as steeped in history as the SWC fold? Several reasons were proposed: 1) the increased popularity of the NFL in Texas had eroded the state’s college fan base; 2) the widely-held belief that the conference was made up of two teams (Texas and Texas A&M) and a series of woeful second-tier teams; and 3) the …

November 20th – @ Iowa State #18 Colorado 21, Iowa State 16
Despite decent weather conditions for late November (41 degrees at kickoff, with no precipitation), only 23,797 bothered to show up to cheer for the hometown Cyclones (3-7) take on the 18th-ranked Buffaloes.
That was too bad for Iowa State players, as the home team almost pulled off the upset. Only after defensive lineman Kerry Hicks and cornerback Chris Hudson teamed up to tackle running back Calvin Branch for a fourth down loss with 1:35 left in the game could the Buffs claim a hard-fought 21-16 win.
Matters appeared to be well in hand after Lamont Warren scored on two first half runs to put the Buffs on top, 14-0. After a scoreless first quarter, Colorado capped off a 12-play, 50-yard drive with a three yard run by Warren on the first play of the second quarter. The next time Colorado had the ball, the Buff offense put together a methodical, season-best 92-yard drive. Warren once again did the honors, this time with a 21-yard run.
14-0, Colorado.
Rather than fold on the final game of the season, Iowa State fought back. A field goal on the final play …

October 9th – Boulder #20 Colorado 30, Missouri 18
The Missouri Tigers presented themselves to the Buffs as the perfect opponent to rebound from a two game losing streak.
Missouri was 1-2-1 on the 1993 season, including an embarrassing loss to Texas A & M (73-0) and a 10-10 tie to lowly SMU. The Buffs had a week to re-group and regain focus on the conference schedule. After a sometimes impressive, sometimes lethargic, performance, Colorado was able to secure a 30-18 win.
The Buffs’ defense, earning much of the criticism for Colorado’s 2-2 start, played significantly better than the unit which had been ranked 96th in the nation heading into the game. Six new defensive starters were inserted, including freshman linebacker Matt Russell and sophomore lineman Shannon Clavelle. For the most part, the defense held Missouri in check as the Buffs mounted a 27-3 lead before permitting late consolation scores. “Defensively, I was pleased with the way we played in the first half”, said coach McCartney. “I thought I saw a good looking defense out there.”
The game opened slowly, with only two field goals being posted in the first twenty minutes of play. With 9:08 to go before …

September 18th – @ Stanford #20 Stanford 41, #7 Colorado 37
Led by senior quarterback Steve Stenstrom, the Stanford Cardinal rallied for 10 points in the last four minutes of the game to snatch a 41-37 win over a shocked Colorado Buffalo squad.
With eight seconds remaining, and Stanford facing a third-and-goal from the Buffs’ five yard line, the game came down to one play.
Stenstrom, who would post 382 yards and five touchdowns passing on the evening, hit Tony Cline in the back of the endzone. As Cline came down with the ball, he was clocked by Colorado senior safety Dwayne Davis. The football came loose, but Cline was credited with a touchdown nonetheless.
After the game, outside linebacker Ron Woolfork was adamant: “(Cline) clearly didn’t have possession of it.” For his part, Davis was too pre-occupied with the hit to notice: “I just ran, gritted my teeth, closed my eyes and tried to make everything on his body come out.” Coloardo head coach Bill McCartney was diplomatic in defeat. “I couldn’t see it,” said McCartney of the game’s final play. “One official told me he questioned it, but that’s all I know.” (See the video highlights, below, …

September 19th – @ Minnesota #11 Colorado 21, Minnesota 20
The third game of Colorado’s 1992 season was played at night (6:00 p.m local time kickoff), and was played indoors (at the Metrodome in Minneapolis). Whether the Buffs were confused by the surroundings or the time of day is unclear, but the 17-0 deficit Colorado found itself in midway through the third quarter was no mistake.
The Golden Gophers of Minnesota had dug a very large hole for the visitors from Boulder.
Enter true freshman Koy Detmer.
Posting the third greatest comeback (in terms of point deficit) in Colorado history, the Buffs rallied behind the little brother of BYU Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer to defeat Minnesota, 21-20. Junior quarterback Duke Tobin was given the start for the injured Kordell Stewart, but Tobin, like the rest of the Colorado offense, was ineffective. At the half, Tobin had completed only two of his 10 pass attempts. The running game, when the five sacks of Tobin were factored in, had amassed a total of minus-eight yards rushing.
With offensive statistics like those, the Buffs were lucky that their defense had come to play. The only first half score came when Gopher Derek …

September 12th – @ Baylor #12 Colorado 57, Baylor 38
Heading off to Waco for the second game of the 1992 season, there was no chance Colorado was going to take the Baylor Bears lightly.
Baylor had defeated the Buffs 16-14 at Folsom Field in 1991, led by quarterback J.J. Joe’s 301 yards of total offense.
Traveling to Waco for only the third time in school history, Colorado exacted a measure of revenge for the 1991 upset in routing the Bears, 57-38. Kordell Stewart, who completed 16-of-17 passes for 251 yards before yielding to an ankle injury, again placed his name in the record books. Stewart completed his first nine passing attempts of the game against the Bears. These nine completions, when combined with the final three straight completions of the Colorado State game, gave the sophomore quarterback a school-record 12 straight completions.
While the final score was impressive, the Buffs would have been just as content to leave Texas after the first 29 minutes of the game. With just over a minute to go in the first half, the Buffs were up by a lopsided score of 33-3. After spotting the Bears an opening 33-yard field goal to open …

National and Big Eight Recap – 1992
The 1992 college football season was dominated by the Miami Hurricanes. That is to say, at least Miami dominated all the way up to its National Championship showdown against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. There, the Crimson Tide throttled Miami, 34-13, to win Alabama’s sixth national title, the first for head coach Gene Stallings. Alabama finished the season 13-0, claiming the nation’s first undisputed title since 1989. Miami’s quarterback Gino Toretta, despite having a quarterback rating of no higher than 19th in the country, was nonetheless awarded the Heisman Trophy. The nation’s leading rusher was San Diego State sophomore Marshall Faulk, who posted 1,630 yards in only 10 games.
In the Big Eight, it was the return of the Big Red, as Nebraska claimed its first undisputed championship since 1988. The Cornhuskers finished the 1992 campaign 9-3, 6-1 in conference play. After falling to Florida State in the Orange Bowl, 27-14, Nebraska finished the season ranked #14. Colorado finished 9-2-1, 5-1-1 in the Big Eight. The Buffs, however, also fell in the postseason, succumbing to Syracuse in the Fiesta Bowl, 26-22, to finish ranked at #13. The only conference team …
