November 28th - Boulder           No. 25 Nebraska 31, Colorado 22

Colorado played with purpose against their hated rival Nebraska, but in the end it was the Cornhuskers who prevailed, 31-22.

The loss ended the season for the 5-7 Buffs, sending the 53,444 in attendance home without a bowl trip for only the third time since 1987, but for the second time in four years.

Nebraska scored first on the cool November morning in Boulder, with quarterback Jammal Lord hitting tight end Matt Herian for a 58-yard touchdown less than five minutes into the game. The Buffs responded on their next possession, with Joel Klatt connecting with D.J. Hackett for a 33-yard score midway through the quarter.

Colorado took its first lead of the contest at 10-7 a few minutes later on a 44yard field goal by Mason Crosby. The lead was short-lived, however, as the ensuing kickoff was returned to the Buffs’ 35-yard line (with the ball placed at the 20 after a facemask penalty was tacked on). It took Nebraska only three plays and one minute of game time to regain the lead, with Lord giving the Cornhuskers a 14-10 lead on a five yard run.

November 8th – Boulder           Colorado 21,  No. 22 Missouri 16

Joel Klatt passed for 187 yards and two touchdowns, leading Colorado to a 21-16 upset of 22nd-ranked Missouri.  Brian Calhoun rushed for 65 yards and a score, while D.J. Hackett caught five passes for 84 yards as the Buffs beat the Tigers for the fifth straight season.

The Buffs scored first, taking a 7-0 lead on a 16-yard pass from Klatt to Derek McCoy, culminating an 82-yard drive to open the contest.  Missouri responded with a 77-yard drive of their own, but the 18-play, 8:22 marathon netted only a field goal.  The Buffs countered with their second long drive, this one covering 80 yards.  Klatt hit fullback Lawrence Vickers from three yards out to give Colorado a 14-3 lead.

Missouri cut the lead to 14-9 midway through the second quarter on a 17-yard pass from quarterback Brad Smith to receiver Victor Sesay (the two-point pass attempt failed).  The Tigers had the chance to take the halftime lead, but on the 15th-play of their next drive, running back Zack Abron fumbled into the Colorado endzone.

The Buffs opened the second half as strongly as the first half, scoring on their first…

November 1st - @ Texas Tech           Texas Tech 26, Colorado 21

In a game in which the offenses for both teams were supposed to be showcased, the defenses for both Colorado and Texas Tech made surprise appearances, with the Red Raiders holding on to defeat the Buffs, 26-21. The Buff defense created six turnovers, including five interceptions, but that was not enough to prevent Colorado from dropping its third straight to fall to 3-6 on the season.

The game started off as well as any Colorado fan could have hoped. Just 17 seconds into the game, Colorado was up 7-0. Sophomore safety J.J. Billingsley made his first career interception on the first play from scrimmage. On the next play, Joel Klatt hit Derek McCoy from 27 yards out, and the Buffs had the lead. Later in the first quarter, after another interception, this one by Medford Moorer, Daniel Jolly capped a second short drive by the Buff offense with a one yard touchdown run. The Buffs were up 14-0, and seemed on their way to their fourth win of the season.

The Red Raiders, though, did not fold. After a 37-yard field goal midway through the second quarter, Texas Tech scored…

October 25th - Boulder           No. 1 Oklahoma 34, Colorado 20

Oklahoma jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, then held Colorado at bay for the remainder of the evening, winning 34-20. Playing before the largest crowd in Colorado history, 54,215, Oklahoma posted its third win over Colorado in less than twelve months.

The Buffs were 25-point underdogs at home to the Sooners, and it looked early on as if Oklahoma would easily cover the spread. Sooner quarterback Jason White, who would go on to win the 2003 Heisman Trophy as the nation’s best player, connected with Brandon Jones on a 54-yard touchdown on the Sooner’s third play from scrimmage. Oklahoma covered 70 yards on its second drive, scoring on a two-yard run by Renaldo Works to make the score 14-0 with 6:03 left to play in the first quarter.

The expected Sooner domination was coming to pass.

But then something funny happened on the way to the rout.

The Buffs started playing well …. Or at least better.

Joel Klatt connected with D.J. Hackett on three passes on the Buffs’ next drive, including a three-yard scoring pass late in the first quarter to cut the lead to 14-7. The…

Baylor – Bye-Bye Week

//posted 10.4.2003

October 4th - @ Baylor           Baylor 42, Colorado 30

The Baylor Bears, winners of just four games in seven Big 12 seasons, and losers of 37 out of their last 38 conference games, stunned Colorado at home, 42-30.

Baylor coach Guy Morriss, in his first season at the helm of the Bears, raised his record to 3-2, giving Baylor as many wins in five games as the Bears had earned in any of the past six seasons.

The game started slowly for both teams, but quickly heated up. After a scoreless first quarter, Colorado took a 17-14 halftime advantage with three scores from close in – a 28-yard Mason Crosby field goal; a one-yard Daniel Jolly run, and a four-yard toss from Erik Greenberg to Derek McCoy.

The Buffs appeared ready to take command of the contest early in the third quarter. Brian Calhoun capped a 75-yard Buff drive to open the second half with a three-yard touchdown run to give the Buffs a 23-14 advantage (the point after attempt failed).

A Baylor blitz soon followed, however, as three touchdowns were scored by the Bears in only three minutes. First, the Bears scored on an eight-yard pass from quarterback Aaron Karas…

September 20th - @ Florida State           No. 10 Florida State 47, Colorado 7

The third-largest crowd in Florida State history, 83,294, witnessed “The Manhandle in the Panhandle”, as Florida State crushed Colorado, 47-7.

Seminole quarterback Chris Rix connected on 30-of-39 passes for a career-best 394 yards and two touchdowns against a tissue paper thin Buff secondary.

The Buffs did manage to stay close for a half. Chris Rix’s 37-yard touchdown pass to Craphonso Thorpe was matched by an 81-yard bomb from Erik Greenberg to Buff speedster Jeremy Bloom. Three Florida State field goals from short range (20, 26, and 27 yards) kept the Buffs within shouting range at halftime, 16-7.

Another field goal and another long touchdown pass from Rix to Thorpe, this time covering 66 yards, padded the lead in the third quarter. Two short touchdown runs sandwiched between a blocked punt for a score gave the Seminoles 21 fourth quarter points and a 47-7 rout. On the day, the Buffs were held to only 275 yards of total offense, with the lone bright spot being the 118 yards rushing posted by sophomore tailback Brian Calhoun.

The Colorado defense, which had been stalwart in the UCLA game only two weeks earlier, surrendered…

September 13th - Boulder           Washington State 47, No. 17 Colorado 26

Washington State scored early and often, cruising to a 47-26 thrashing of Colorado before 48,146 disbelieving Buff fans.

The Cougars scored 20 first quarter points, then posted 24 more in the third quarter to squelch any hopes of a Colorado comeback. In mauling the Buffs, Washington State became the first opposing team to post over 45 points in Boulder in twenty years.

The carnage started early. Quarterback Matt Kegel hit Sammy Moore on a 74-yard bomb to put Washington State up 7-0 less than five minutes in. A three-yard touchdown pass from Joel Klatt to Joe Klopfenstein brought the Buffs to within 7-6 (the extra point attempt was blocked), but two long plays padded the Cougars’ lead. A 77-yard touchdown pass, coupled with a 41-yard interception return for a score gave Washington State a 20-6 lead after one quarter.

The second quarter witnessed the Buffs make a small comeback. Sophomore quarterback Erik Greenberg, substituting for an injured Joel Klatt, connected with Derek McCoy from 46 yards out, bringing the Buffs to within seven at 20-13, but the Buffs were not to score again until the score was up to 44-13.…

August 30th – at Denver          Colorado 42, No. 23 Colorado State 35

Sophomore quarterback Joel Klatt was the unlikely hero in leading Colorado to a 42-35 win over its in-state rival, Colorado State, in the 2003 season-opener for both teams.

Prior to completing 21-of-34 passes for 402 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions against the Rams, Klatt’s career numbers were as follows: a total of three passes, completing none. Yet before 76,219 rain-soaked fans at Invesco Field and a national television audience on ESPN, Klatt out-performed the Rams’ senior quarterback, Bradlee Van Pelt.

After CSU took a 7-0 first quarter lead, Colorado erupted for 28 second quarter points. Bobby Purify tied the score with a six-yard run, but the Rams quickly jumped back out on top with a 32-yard Van Pelt touchdown pass. The remainder of the quarter belonged to Joel Klatt. The former walk-on connected with Derek McCoy for an 82-yard score, then gave the Buffs their first lead when D.J. Hackett turned an acrobatic catch of a Klatt pass at the two-yard line into a touchdown. Colorado took a 28-14 halftime lead when Klatt hit John Donahoe from 45 yards out with just 29 seconds remaining.

The…
