December 25th – @ Aloha Bowl, Honolulu, Hawaii          #17 Colorado 41, #25 Fresno State 30

While the Buffs found no snow on the ground on Christmas Day, 1993, they did find presents there.

Colorado’s defense forced four Fresno State fumbles, converting all four turnovers into points as the Buffs ran away from the Bulldogs, 41-30, to win the 12th-annual Aloha Bowl. Sophomore tailback Rashaan Salaam rushed for 135 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Buffs’ offense, while the depleted Colorado secondary withstood 523 yards passing by Fresno State’s Trent Dilfer. “It’s sweet,” said head coach Bill McCartney. “It’s what we wanted to accomplish when we redesigned our goals after losing to Nebraska. We wanted to close the season with three straight wins, go to a bowl, and bring back a trophy.”

At the outset, it looked like the Buffaloes from the Big Eight were interested in finishing off the Bulldogs early in order to get to the beach by early afternoon (kickoff was at 10:45 a.m., local time). On the Buffs’ first possession (after Chris Hudson had stripped Dilfer of the ball on the game’s opening drive), Stewart directed the Buffs on an eight-play, 53-yard drive culminated in a Salaam…

September 18th – @ Stanford           #20 Stanford 41, #7 Colorado 37

Led by senior quarterback Steve Stenstrom, the Stanford Cardinal rallied for 10 points in the last four minutes of the game to snatch a 41-37 win over a shocked Colorado Buffalo squad.

With eight seconds remaining, and Stanford facing a third-and-goal from the Buffs’ five yard line, the game came down to one play.

Stenstrom, who would post 382 yards and five touchdowns passing on the evening, hit Tony Cline in the back of the endzone. As Cline came down with the ball, he was clocked by Colorado senior safety Dwayne Davis. The football came loose, but Cline was credited with a touchdown nonetheless.

After the game, outside linebacker Ron Woolfork was adamant: “(Cline) clearly didn’t have possession of it.” For his part, Davis was too pre-occupied with the hit to notice: “I just ran, gritted my teeth, closed my eyes and tried to make everything on his body come out.” Coloardo head coach Bill McCartney was diplomatic in defeat. “I couldn’t see it,” said McCartney of the game’s final play. “One official told me he questioned it, but that’s all I know.” (See the video highlights, below,…

Colorado v. Syracuse – Fiesta Bowl – January 1, 1993

Lost Luggage, Lost Jacket, Lost Holiday

I had never been to Phoenix before.  In fact, unless you count stepping across the state line at the Four Corners area which represents the intersection of the borders of Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, I had never been to Arizona before.  Coming at the end of December, a trip to the Fiesta Bowl to cap off the 1992 season seemed like a great idea.

My trip got off to a bad start when my luggage failed to meet me at the Phoenix airport.  Fortunately, my hosts for my first evening in Phoenix, Kyle and Kim, were more than hospitable in taking care of my needs until the next day when my wayward luggage decided to complete its journey.

(Author’s Note:  Allow me to digress.  Kyle and Kim were floormates of mine from my freshman year in Libby Hall.  In fact, Kyle was the first person I met in Boulder.  I was carrying up some boxes to my dorm room my first day in town when Kyle strolled down the hallway, stuck out his large hand, and, in a voice which was…

November 21st – Boulder          #11 Colorado 31, Iowa State 10

Kordell Stewart threw for three touchdowns and 279 yards as the Buffs raced out to a 28-3 halftime lead before cruising to a 31-10 win over Iowa State.

The Buffs put the Cyclones on notice early that Colorado would not fall victim to the complacency which had cost the Cornhuskers.  Linebacker Chad Brown recovered a fumble by Iowa State fullback Chris Ulrich on the Cyclones’ first possession.  On the very next play from scrimmage, Stewart connected with fullback James Hill on a 19-yard score, and Colorado was ahead to stay, 7-0.

After Iowa State cut the Buffs’ lead to 7-3, the Buffs scored three touchdowns over a nine-minute span in the second quarter to make the second half irrelevant.  First Stewart hit Michael Westbrook for 24 yards and a 14-3 lead.  Next, Stewart connected with tight end Christian Fauria from one-yard out and a 21-3 advantage.  Finally, Lamont Warren took it in from three yards to finish off a nine-play, 82-yard drive, and the Buffs were dominating, 28-3.

Stewart’s 279 passing yards gave him 2,109 for the year, the first time in Colorado history a Buff quarterback had surpassed the 2,000-yard…

 September 5th –Boulder          #12 Colorado 37, Colorado State 17

The 1992 season-opener had all the makings of a disaster.

The Colorado/Colorado State game was the renewal of an intra-state rivalry, which always meant a hard-fought game.  In addition, the Buffs were risking state and national embarrassment if their new offense failed to produce against a Colorado State squad which had stumbled to a 3-8 record in 1991.  To the relief of many Buff fans, though, the Colorado offense did not disappoint.  Head Coach Bill McCartney looked like a genius as the Buffs came away with a 37-17 win in the 1992 opener for both teams.

Sophomore quarterback Kordell Stewart, having earned the starting nod over junior Vance Joseph, smashed a ten-year old team passing record by throwing for 409 yards in completing 21-of-36 attempts. The previous high for any Buff quarterback had been Randy Essington’s 361-yard effort in Colorado’s 40-14 loss to Nebraska in 1982.  Stewart contributed an additional 21 yards on the ground for an all-purpose tally of 430 yards, breaking the record of 353 yards held by Bobby Anderson for 24 seasons.  “I’m just happy to get a game under my belt,” said Stewart after the Colorado State contest. …

1992 -”Air” Bill

National and Big Eight Recap – 1992

The 1992 college football season was dominated by the Miami Hurricanes.  That is to say, at least Miami dominated all the way up to its National Championship showdown against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.  There, the Crimson Tide throttled Miami, 34-13, to win Alabama’s sixth national title, the first for head coach Gene Stallings.  Alabama finished the season 13-0, claiming the nation’s first undisputed title since 1989.  Miami’s quarterback Gino Toretta, despite having a quarterback rating of no higher than 19th in the country, was nonetheless awarded the Heisman Trophy.  The nation’s leading rusher was San Diego State sophomore Marshall Faulk, who posted 1,630 yards in only 10 games.

In the Big Eight, it was the return of the Big Red, as Nebraska claimed its first undisputed championship since 1988.  The Cornhuskers finished the 1992 campaign 9-3, 6-1 in conference play.  After falling to Florida State in the Orange Bowl, 27-14, Nebraska finished the season ranked #14.  Colorado finished 9-2-1, 5-1-1 in the Big Eight.  The Buffs, however, also fell in the postseason, succumbing to Syracuse in the Fiesta Bowl, 26-22, to finish ranked at #13.  The only conference…

Colorado v. Alabama – 1991 Blockbuster Bowl

The 1991 season was a mixed bag for Colorado and its fans. An 8-2-1 regular season record, along with a share of a third consecutive Big Eight title, were certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Still, after posting an 11-1 record in 1989 and an 11-1-1 record in 1990, an eight win season seemed like a letdown to many in the Buff Nation. Still, there were some memorable games in 1991, including a big 34-17 win over Oklahoma in Norman (when the Buffs were ranked 22nd and the Sooners ranked 12th), and the epic Ice Bowl 19-19 tie with Nebraska in Boulder which earned the Buffs a share of the Big Eight title.

After a 2-2 start, Colorado had gone 6-0-1 in conference play. The Buffs were far from dominant down the stretch, though, defeating unranked Oklahoma State, Kansas, and Iowa State by a combined 13 points. The Buffs finished the regular season ranked 15th in the nation, earning a trip to Miami for the 2nd annual Blockbuster Bowl. The opponent would be 8th-ranked and SEC runner-up Alabama, looking for its own measure of national recognition.

What followed was a memorable game which came down to the…

November 23rd – @ Iowa State            #15 Colorado 17, Iowa State 14

Running back Lamont Warren capped the most successful freshman rushing season in Colorado history with a 168-yard performance against Iowa State in a 17-14 Colorado win.  Warren sprinted 74 yards for one score and carried the load on a ten-play, 80-yard drive as Colorado took the lead for good in the third quarter. Lamont Warren finished the 1991 season with 830 rushing yards, a Colorado freshman record.

The game conditions in Ames, Iowa, were horrendous, marking the third time in four weeks the Buffs had faced adverse conditions.  Iowa State sold 36,256 tickets for the game, but a crowd estimated at 2,500 was all that braved the blowing snow and minus-20 wind chill temperatures.

Iowa State jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but Warren’s 74-yard touchdown run gave Colorado a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter. A 17-yard touchdown run by Cyclone Jim Knott, though, late in the second quarter, gave Iowa State a 14-10 halftime edge.  In the third quarter, the Buffs played against a 20-mph wind, keeping the ball in Warren’s hands.  Warren carried the ball five times for 39 yards on the drive, culminated with…
