Trivia – Colorado State

Colorado State – 2009

  • The Rams went bowling last season, but it wasn’t due to stellar play by the defense. Colorado State allowed 393 points in 2008 (38 to the Buffs), an average of 30.2 points per game. The point total allowed has only been surpassed twice in school history (413 points in 1972; 502 points in 1981). While the 2008 Rams went 7-6, the other two Ram teams who gave up as many points settled for a combined record of 1-22.
  • Steve Fairchild set a record for wins (7), by a first year coach at CSU (the record at CU is Rick Neuheisel’s ten wins in 1995). Four other Ram coaches earned five wins in their debut, including Sonny Lubick (5-6 in 1993).
  • Sonny Lubick left the Colorado State program at the end of the 2007 season. His records speak for themselves:
    • overall record at CSU of 108-74
    • six conference titles won or shared
    • nine bowl games (CSU has played in a total of 12 in its history)
    • four seasons with over ten wins (the only four such seasons in CSU history), but …
    • 4-9 record v. Colorado
  • The 2008 CU/CSU game set a first,

Preview – Colorado State

//posted 8.20.2009

For those of you who are new to CU at the Game, I would like to introduce you to “Stuart’s T.I.P.S.” for the game. Every week, I will break down the upcoming game, and the Buffs’ opponent, into four categories:

  • T – Talent. Quite simply, which team has the better horses.
  • I – Intangibles. Momentum, home field, weather – outside factors which will play a role in the outcome.
  • P – Preparation. Is either team coming off a short week? Are there injuries? A rivalry game the following week?
  • S – Statistics. If you follow CU at the Game, you know you are going to be inundated with stats.

With these factors in mind, let’s take a look at the Buffs’ opening game opponent, the Colorado State Rams.

T – Talent

Frankly, if this is a category in which the Buffs come in second behind the Rams, its time for Colorado fans to take up knitting. Colorado has had, does have, and always should have, more talent on the field. As we know all too well, however, talent does not always win out.

The 2009 season is no exception. The Rams are hurting in several key positions, and…

Colorado 31, Colorado State 28 – Sept. 3, 2005

For the fourth year in a row, the “Rocky Mountain Showdown” between Colorado and Colorado State came down to the final minute of play. For the third year in a row, the Buffs prevailed.

Colorado opened its 2005 campaign by defeating the Rams, 31-28, before a sweltering Folsom Field record crowd of 54,972. Mason Crosby connected from 47 yards out with four seconds remaining to give the Buffs the victory.

Unlike 2003 and 2004, when CU watched double digit leads evaporate against CSU, only to win those games in the waning moments, much of the 2005 contest was controlled by the Rams. The Rams took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a one-yard run by Jimmy Green. The Buffs countered in the second quarter with 10 unanswered points on a 32-yard Mason Crosby field goal and a one-yard run on fourth down by senior running back Lawrence Vickers. The Colorado lead lasted just two minutes, however, as Buff killers Justin Holland and David Anderson hooked up on a one yard touchdown pass to give the Rams a 14-10 halftime lead.

CSU stretched the lead to 21-10 late in the…

 September 6th – Boulder          Colorado State 23, Colorado 7

All signs pointed toward an opening day victory for Colorado in their game against Colorado State.

Colorado had gone 4-0 at home in 1985 against unranked opponents.  Colorado State was predicted to be a good team in 1986, having gone 5-7 in 1985, but the Rams were not considered a threat to BYU’s dominance in the Western Athletic Conference, and was certainly was not a Top 20 team.  What was more, the Buffs came into the game against the Rams with a 45-15-2 advantage in the series, including a 31-3 win in 1983.  The stars were aligned for a great start to the 1986 season.

Unfortunately for Buff fans, the game would not be played on paper.

Frustrating is the only word to describe the 23-7 loss to Colorado State in the 1986 season opener.  The Buffs moved the ball, racking up 304 yards of total offense and an average of five yards per play.  The defense held up its end, surrendering only one touchdown drive all afternoon (and that coming on an eight yard drive).  Then what went wrong?

Six turnovers.

Four fumbles and a pair of interceptions, the last…

November 14th – @Kansas            Kansas 27, Colorado 0

Kansas came into the game 6-3, but only 2-3 in the Big Eight. As had become custom for Colorado, the defense made an effort, and the score was only 10-0 at half. The Buffs, though, made the Jayhawks look like worldbeaters, completing a second consecutive year without a road win.

Colorado loss was its fourth in a row. Leading ground-gainer Lee Rouson did his part, gaining 73 yards on 19 carries, but the passing game continued to be pathetic. Randy Essington was successful on just eight-of-23 passes for 56 yards and one pick.

Enough said.

A Sorry State

“A Sorry State” was the headline in the Rocky Mountain News on November 15th. The Buffs had fallen to 2-8, while at the same time Air Force was losing to Notre Dame 35-7. Even lower on the scale were the Colorado State Rams, losing at home to lowly New Mexico, 28-16. CSU fell to 0-10 before only 10,149 loyal fans.

A sorry state of affairs – and football – indeed.

- Game Notes -

- Lee Rouson, as a freshman, would lead the Buffs in rushing in 1981, carrying the ball 159…
