Hawai’i 34, Colorado 17

September 3, 2011          Hawai’i 34, Colorado 17

As had been the case in 2010, Colorado failed to score in the first half against Hawai’i.

As had been the case in 2010, Colorado stormed back with a strong second half effort.

In 2010, the Buffs fell behind 10-0 at halftime, but dominated in the second half, out-scoring the Hawai’i 31-3 in cruising to a 31-10 victory.

In 2011, the Buffs fell behind 17-0 at halftime, played well at times, and had their chances, but it was not enough, as Colorado lost its first game under Jon Embree, 34-17.

Colorado had a game plan to withstand the onslaught of quarterback Bryant Moniz and the prolific passing game of the Hawai’i Rainbows. Pressure Moniz with an array of blitzes, trying to keep the senior quarterback from making deep throws, while protecting the Buffs’ young secondary.

The game plan was a success early, as the Buffs sacked Moniz three times in the first quarter, and held the 5,000-yard passer to a one-for-seven start through the air.

Unfortunately for the Buffs’ defense, they failed to account for the ability of Bryant Moniz to run with the football.

Moniz shredded the Colorado defense with his…

Friday Fast Facts

Injury Update

Fall camp was fairly kind to the University of Colorado football team, at least in terms of injuries. The Buffs emerged from fall practices with only a few players lost. Only freshman defensive back Jered Bell (torn ACL in first week of fall practice) has been lost for the season.

Other injured players:

Shawn Daniels, senior offensive lineman – out 4-6 weeks with severe strain to a calf muscle

Vince Ewing, sophomore defensive back – out for Hawai’i game – still suffering from swelling as a result of a torn ACL in 2010

Sherrard Harrington, freshman defensive back – out 6-8 weeks with hip contusion – a likely candidate to red-shirt this fall

In addition, freshman offensive tackle Alex Lewis (flu) and sophomore linebacker Liloa Nobriga (hamstring) did not make the trip to Hawai’i.

So, even though the Buffs are without three defensive backs entering the season, the injury list still has to be considered a positive for the team overall.

Can’t tell the players without a program

Even though Division 1-A teams are limited to 85 scholarship players, most teams carry over 100 on their roster. As a result, duplicates on jersey numbers is not…

2004 – Game One – Colorado v. Colorado State – September 4, 2004

 September 4th – Boulder          Colorado 27, Colorado State 24

A pitch from Colorado State quarterback Justin Holland to running back Tristan Walker was stopped at the Colorado three-yard line by defensive backs  J.J. Billingsley and Lorenzo Sims as time expired, preserving a wild 27-24 Buff win. The frenetic finish, before a record Folsom Field crowd of 54,954, gave Colorado head coach Gary Barnett and his players something other than scandal to talk about for the first time in 2004.

The game started out about as well as the Buffs could have hoped.  Colorado scored on its opening drive, a one-yard plunge by senior running back Bobby Purify.  Junior quarterback Joel Klatt scored from a yard out on the Buffs’ second drive, giving the Buffs an opening quarter 14-0 lead.  The lead was up to 17-0 before CSU quarterback Justin Holland connected with tight end Matt Bartz 23 seconds before halftime to make the score at the break 17-7/

The second half witnessed the pendulum of emotion swing back and forth between the two benches.  Colorado State climbed back into the contest, tying the score at 17-all with…

Buffs and the Cowboys

The Colorado/Wyoming game would be the 25th meeting between the two neighbors, but the first in the series since 1982. Colorado held a commanding 22-2-1 edge in the rivalry, but one of the two losses was the 24-10 setback in 1982, Bill McCartney’s first year as head coach at Colorado. The Cowboys in 1990 had opened the season with a run of nine consecutive wins (and a #19 national ranking) before succumbing to four consecutive losses to end the year, including a 17-15 setback to California in the Copper Bowl.

Wyoming was already 0-1 for 1991 before coming to Boulder, opening with a 32-17 loss to Hawaii. The poll before the game moved Colorado up a notch from the preseason poll, from #13 to #12 nationally, thanks to none other than Georgia Tech, which fell out of the top ten in losing, 34-22, to Penn State in the Kickoff Classic (the Yellow Jackets would not return to the top ten for the remainder of 1991).

 September 7th – Boulder           #12 Colorado 30, Wyoming 13

The Colorado Buffaloes opened the defense of their national championship at home with a satisfying 30-13 win over Wyoming. Darian Hagan, showing no ill effects…
