Sports Illustrated investigation digs deeper into Ohio State’s transgressions

Perhaps now we can understand the timing of Tressel’s resignation.

Sports Illustrated is coming out with an article in this week’s edition, outlining an eight-year pattern of NCAA violations under head coach Jim Tressel.

In the article, the authors report that at least 28 players have been alleged to have traded or sold memorabilia, “at least 20″ players swapped memorabilia for tattoos, and at least four players traded memorabilia for marijuana.

The history of Tressel’s “ignorance is bliss” started at Youngstown State, where he claimed not to know that his star quarterback had received a car and more than $10,000 from a school trustee – even though it was later revealed that it was Tressel who told the player to go and see the trustee.

In 2003, Buckeyes’ running back Maurice Clarett became a pariah after he was found to have received money and other benefits, but Tressel, who had said that he spent more time with Clarett than any other player, claimed he had no knowledge of Clarett’s violations.

In 2004, an investigation uncovered a $500 payment to quarterback Troy Smith. Again, Tressel said he had…

Colorado came back from a 14-3 deficit to build a two score halftime lead, then fought off a series of Kansas State challenges to post a well-earned 44-36 victory over Kansas State. Junior running back Rodney Stewart ran for career-high 195 yards, caught two passes for 49 yards, and threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Toney Clemons in leading the Buffs to their second consecutive victory over a Big 12 opponent for the first time since 2007.

The stars seemed aligned for the Buffs to play well against the Wildcats: the weather was cool (37 degrees), but sunny; the Buffs were on a high from winning their first game in the post-Dan Hawkins era; and it was Senior Day, with the players and fans pumped after a pre-game ceremony honoring the out-going seniors.

So, naturally, the Buffs came out and fell flat.

Arthur Jaffee lost the opening kickoff in the sun, and was swarmed under at the Buffs’ 13-yard line after finally collecting the kick. Three offensive plays netted a minus-five yards for the Colorado offense, and Zach Grossnickle’s short (34 yard) punt was returned by Ty Zimmerman 41 yards to the…

November 13th – Boulder Colorado 34, Iowa State 14

In the first game of the post-Dan Hawkins era at the University of Colorado, the Buffs played their most complete game of the 2010 season, defeating Iowa State, 34-14. Long-time assistant coach Brian Cabral won his first game as interim coach, as the Buffs held the Cyclones to just 229 yards of total offense.

The game, as almost every game in the 2010 season, began with Colorado on offense. For only the third time all year, though, the Buffs’ opening drive concluded with points. Two Rodney Stewart runs netted 11 yards and a first down before Cody Hawkins threw his first pass since his father was fired as head coach. The play was a simple one, a bubble screen pass to wide receiver Paul Richardson. The freshman wide receiver, though, evaded tacklers and out-raced Iowa State defenders for a 55 yard gain down to the Cyclone 14 yard line. Three more plays netted seven yards, leaving the Buffs with a fourth-and-three at the ISU seven yard line. October 23rd – Boulder Texas Tech 27, Colorado 24

Colorado watched a ten-point fourth quarter lead, and any realistic hope for a bowl bid, slip away in the fourth quarter against Texas Tech. The Red Raiders out-scored the Buffs 13-0 in the final quarter, handing the Buffs a 27-24 setback. The loss dropped Colorado to 3-4 overall, 0-3 in Big 12 play, as 47,665 on hand for Homecoming went home knowing that Colorado may well have to wait yet another year for a chance at a winning record and bowl appearance.

As has been the custom in 2010, Colorado opened the game with the football (most teams defer if they win the coin toss, but Colorado has been taking the ball when the Buffs win the toss, all but assuring that every game this season will commence with the Buffs’ offense on the field). Neither did fared well in the first possessions, each gaining one first down before punting.

Colorado’s second drive was given a boost when Travon Patterson returned the Texas Tech punt 45 yards to the Red Raider 40-yard line. The Buffs methodically moved the ball down the field from there, taking 11 plays (and just over six minutes…

For the Colorado Buffaloes, the 2009 season ended the way it began, with a disheartening home loss to a rival. A season which had the potential for “ten wins”, and the expectation of at least seven or eight wins and a bowl game, ended with a 28-20 loss to Nebraska to put an end to a miserable 3-9 season.

Against Nebraska, the offense rolled up 403 yards, a season-high against Nebraska. But, when the game was on the line in the second half, the Colorado offense failed on three consecutive trips to the red zone to produce any points.

Against Nebraska, the defense limited the Cornhuskers to 217 yards of total offense. But, when the game was on the line in the fourth quarter, the Colorado defense gave up a 13-play, 80-yard drive which consumed 6:52 of game time, and resulted in a touchdown which clinched the game for Nebraska.

Against Nebraska, the Buffs had a 100-yard rusher (Rodney Stewart, 110 yards), two 100-yard receivers (Scotty McKnight, 114 yards; Markques Simas, 108 yards), but could not produce a sustained offensive attack.

Colorado had it’s opportunities, but four trips inside the Iowa State red zone netted three points, as the Buffs fell in Ames, 17-10. Falling to 3-7 on the season, the Buffs guaranteed themselves a fourth straight losing season for only the second time in school history. Colorado out-gained Iowa State, 390 yards to 310, but three turnovers, 110 yards in penalties, and missed opportunities doomed the Buffs to a third straight loss in Ames for – you guessed it – only the second time in school history (1979, 1981, 1983).

A low scoring game was certainly in the offing early, as both teams generated negative yardage in their opening drives. On Iowa State’s second drive, the Buffs had the Cyclones backed up, facing a third-and-15 at the ISU 12-yard line. A face mask penalty on the Buffs, though, kept the drive alive – and set the tone for the day. Iowa State took advantage, piecing together a nine-play, 83-yard drive to take a lead the Cyclones would not surrender. Colorado drove 71 yards on its first drive of the game against Kansas State, taking a 6-3 first quarter lead. The remainder of the game, however, the Buffs’ offense generated only 173 yards, turning the ball over four times in falling to the Wildcats, 20-6. The Buffs wasted an outstanding effort from their defense on the afternoon, as the Kansas State offense was held in check for most of the game. Mistakes and penalties, however, continued to plague the Buffs, with Colorado falling to 2-5 on the 2009 season.

The morning start (11:30 CT) seemed to favor the home team, as Kansas State took the opening kickoff and moved smartly down the field. After only five plays, the Wildcats had a first-and-ten at the Colorado 12-yard line. The Buffs’ defense stiffened, though, and Kansas State was forced to settle for a Josh Cherry 25-yard field goal. The Buffs responded in kind with their first drive, converting two third downs in pushing the ball to the Kansas State 23-yard line. From there, the drive chart went as follows:

West Virginia 35, Colorado 24

October 1, 2009 – at West Virginia West Virginia 35, Colorado 24

West Virginia running back Noel Devine rushed for a career-high 220 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown on the Mountaineers’ second play from scrimmage, leading West Virginia to a 35-24 win over Colorado in Morgantown. Cody Hawkins had 292 yards passing and two touchdowns for Colorado, but also threw three inteceptions. Running back Rodney Stewart had 105 yards rushing for the Buffs, and tight end Riar Geer had a career-best 113 yards receiving, but a combination of missed opportunities and missed assignments doomed Colorado to a 1-3 record in non-conference play.

The game, played in good weather before a crowd of 60,055 at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown, started ominously for Colorado.

The Buffs took the opening kickoff and strung together a 10-play, 45-yard drive, stalling at the WVU 23 yard line. Aric Goodman, the hero of the 2008 game against West Virginia, failed in this instance, missing a 40-yard field goal attempt. It took the Mountaineers only two plays to take the lead, with running back Noel Devine slicing through the middle of the Colorado defensive line, then outracing the Buff secondary for a 77-yard touchdown.
