Scouting the Nation

As the summer of 1993 wound down, (a great summer for me and my lady, thank you very much) the pre-season magazines appeared. There was little or no consensus as to which team would emerge from the upcoming season ranked No. 1 on January 1, 1994. Florida State received much of the ink, but Alabama was also getting support for a repeat of its 1992 National Championship. When the pre-season Associated Press poll came out, five different teams received first-place votes. Included with Florida State, Alabama, Michigan, and Syracuse was Stanford, which was ranked no higher than 15th overall.

There was consensus as to the Colorado Buffaloes and their season, however, at least as to several issues. First, everyone agreed that the Buffs’ 1993 schedule would be brutal. The non-conference slate included ranked Miami (No. 5 in the pre-season poll) and Stanford (15th), along with the nearly-ranked Texas (30th overall) and Baylor (31st). If Colorado could survive September, conference clashes against Oklahoma, improving Kansas, and, of course, Nebraska, loomed. “Maximum Challenge” was the motto chosen by the team for the season, and a glance at the schedule explained why.

There also seemed to be uniform opinion as…

November 21st – Boulder          #11 Colorado 31, Iowa State 10

Kordell Stewart threw for three touchdowns and 279 yards as the Buffs raced out to a 28-3 halftime lead before cruising to a 31-10 win over Iowa State.

The Buffs put the Cyclones on notice early that Colorado would not fall victim to the complacency which had cost the Cornhuskers.  Linebacker Chad Brown recovered a fumble by Iowa State fullback Chris Ulrich on the Cyclones’ first possession.  On the very next play from scrimmage, Stewart connected with fullback James Hill on a 19-yard score, and Colorado was ahead to stay, 7-0.

After Iowa State cut the Buffs’ lead to 7-3, the Buffs scored three touchdowns over a nine-minute span in the second quarter to make the second half irrelevant.  First Stewart hit Michael Westbrook for 24 yards and a 14-3 lead.  Next, Stewart connected with tight end Christian Fauria from one-yard out and a 21-3 advantage.  Finally, Lamont Warren took it in from three yards to finish off a nine-play, 82-yard drive, and the Buffs were dominating, 28-3.

Stewart’s 279 passing yards gave him 2,109 for the year, the first time in Colorado history a Buff quarterback had surpassed the 2,000-yard…

November 14th – @ Kansas          #13 Colorado 25, #20 Kansas 18

The Kansas Jayhawks returned home to Lawrence to face the Buffs after being humbled by Nebraska, 49-7.  It was the Jayhawks’ first conference loss after averaging 33 points per game in accumulating four Big Eight wins.  With the Buffs’ falling to the Cornhuskers by an equally lopsided score the week before, the Buffs were not in a position to take the Jayhawks lightly.

An estimated crowd of 43,000, the largest crowd to witness a Colorado/Kansas game in Lawrence since 1968, watched the Buffs come out and dominate play in the first half.  Senior defensive tackle Marcellous Elder tipped a pass from Kansas quarterback Chip Hilleary late in the first quarter, with the ball landing in the arms of Elder’s linemate Leonard Renfro.  Renfro took the ball in from 18 yards out for a 7-0 Colorado lead.

A few moments later, after the Buffs’ defense had snuffed out another Jayhawk drive and Kordell Stewart had connected with Charles E. Johnson on a 54-yard fly pattern to the one yard line, junior tailback James Hill busted over a yard out for a 14-0 Colorado lead.

The Buffs lead at the half was ten points, 17-7,…

September 26th – Boulder          #10 Colorado 28, Iowa 12

Surviving the Minnesota game allowed Colorado to return to the top ten in the polls for the first time since finishing ranked No. 1 at the end of the 1990 season.  Colorado’s final non-conference opponent for the 1992 season was the Iowa Hawkeyes in Boulder.  The Hawkeyes had begun the year ranked 16th in the nation, but had fallen out of the polls after succumbing to North Carolina State and co-defending National Champion Miami before rebounding against Iowa State.  Iowa came to Boulder 1-2, off of a bye week and in search of the consistency that had resulted in a 10-1-1 record in 1991.

For the second week, it was the Buffs’ defense which carried the day.  Despite allowing the Hawkeyes to hold the ball for 36:57 of the contest, Colorado’s defense allowed only 229 yards of total offense.  Hawkeye quarterbacks were sacked by the Buffs nine times on the day, as Buff outside linebackers Chad Brown and Ron Woolfork teamed up for seven sacks and 73 total yards in losses.

Two early series set the tone for the game.

On the game’s first play from scrimmage, Iowa quarterback Jim Hartlieb hit Harold…

National and Big Eight Recap – 1992

The 1992 college football season was dominated by the Miami Hurricanes.  That is to say, at least Miami dominated all the way up to its National Championship showdown against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.  There, the Crimson Tide throttled Miami, 34-13, to win Alabama’s sixth national title, the first for head coach Gene Stallings.  Alabama finished the season 13-0, claiming the nation’s first undisputed title since 1989.  Miami’s quarterback Gino Toretta, despite having a quarterback rating of no higher than 19th in the country, was nonetheless awarded the Heisman Trophy.  The nation’s leading rusher was San Diego State sophomore Marshall Faulk, who posted 1,630 yards in only 10 games.

In the Big Eight, it was the return of the Big Red, as Nebraska claimed its first undisputed championship since 1988.  The Cornhuskers finished the 1992 campaign 9-3, 6-1 in conference play.  After falling to Florida State in the Orange Bowl, 27-14, Nebraska finished the season ranked #14.  Colorado finished 9-2-1, 5-1-1 in the Big Eight.  The Buffs, however, also fell in the postseason, succumbing to Syracuse in the Fiesta Bowl, 26-22, to finish ranked at #13.  The only conference team…

September 21st – Boulder           #19 Colorado 58, Minnesota 0

The Minnesota Golden Gophers came to Boulder 1-0 on the young season, hoping to build on their 6-5 effort from 1990. Instead, it was the Buffs who left Folsom Field with an improved state of mind, as Colorado mauled Minnesota, 58-0. In all, Colorado amassed 612 yards of total offense, only the eighth time in school history Colorado had surpassed the 600-yard mark.

Leading the onslaught was quarterback Darian Hagan, who passed for two touchdowns, connecting on 7-of-8 passes for 162 yards. The tone was set early, as Minnesota turned the ball on the first possession of the contest. On the Buffs’ first play, Hagan connected with tight end Rico Smith on a 40-yard touchdown. In all, the Buffs scored on six of seven first half possessions on their way to a 38-0 halftime lead.

The second half allowed the Buffs to give younger players a chance to give the Folsom Field faithful a glimpse of the future. In all, 72 players saw action. Sophomore quarterback Vance Joseph led the Buffs to three touchdowns, while freshman quarterback Kordell Stewart also played. Stewart led the Buffs in rushing, picking up 73 yards…

National and Big Eight recap -1991

For the second consecutive year, after occurring only twice in the past twenty, the college football season ended with a split national championship. The Miami Hurricanes went 12-0 in 1991 to win the Associated Press title, it’s fourth championship in nine years. Miami was forced to share the limelight, however, with the Washington Huskies, who also went 12-0. Washington was awarded the national championship by the Coaches’ poll, later re-named the CNN/USA Today poll. Both teams went 11-0 in the regular season, but with Washington contractually bound to play Big Ten champion Iowa in the Rose Bowl, there was no way for the teams to decide the matter on the field.

Washington beat Iowa, 46-34, in the Rose Bowl, capping a season in which the Huskies led the nation in turnover margin and rushing defense. Miami, for its part, beat Nebraska, 22-0, in the Orange Bowl, winning the inaugural Big East title in leading the nation in scoring defense (9.1 pts. per game). Don James of Washington was the consensus choice for coach of the year, while wide receiver Desmond Howard of Michigan was the Heisman trophy winner.

In the Big Eight, as nationally, there was…

October 20th – @ Kansas           #14 Colorado 41, Kansas 10

Colorado put together a complete game for the first time all season, scoring on its first drive on the way to a 17-0 first quarter lead and a 41-10 win over 1-4-1 Kansas. Eric Bieniemy rushed for 174 yards on the afternoon, but his three touchdowns were the story of the day. Bieniemy’s second touchdown tied, and his third touchdown broke, Bobby Anderson’s record for career rushing touchdowns. Bieniemy new touchdown total was 35, setting the new standard with five games still to play.

Colorado scored first in a game for the first time in 1990, with a 36-yard field goal by Jim Harper to give the Buffs an early 3-0 lead. A 31-yard touchdown run by Eric Bieniemy, who had 174 yards on just 18 carries on the day, gave Colorado a 10-0 lead midway through the quarter. The rout appeared to be on when Darian Hagan hit Mike Pritchard for a 44-yard touchdown with time still left on the first quarter clock.

Kansas did make a game of it briefly in the second quarter. A controversial call on a Hagan fumble (Bieniemy claimed he had the ball, but possession…
