Kansas State – Six weeks to History, the Buffs move up to No. 1

Having learned their lesson against Oklahoma State, the Colorado Buffaloes did not allow Kansas State to open up strong. Instead, the Buffs dominated from beginning to end, rolling up the most points by a Colorado team in 20 years, mauling Kansas State, 59-11. J.J. Flannigan rushed for a career-high 246 yards and four touchdowns as Colorado rushed for 518 yards. The defense also contributed, holding Kansas State without a first down and only eight (eight!) yards of total offense in the first half.

Flannigan opened up the contest with a 57-yard run on Colorado’s first play from scrimmage. On the next play, Flannigan scored from two yards out as Colorado posted a 7-0 lead in the first minute of play. A few minutes later, quarterback Darian Hagan scored from a yard out, and the outcome was no longer in doubt. On the day, Hagan rushed for 156 yards while passing for 69 more. The numbers allowed Hagan to become only the fifth player in NCAA history to rush and pass for over 1,000 yards in the same season. Hagan’s totals for 1989: 1,002 yards passing; 1,004 yards…

October 28th – @ Oklahoma #3 Colorado 20, Oklahoma 3

Colorado used a stifling defense and just enough offense to take a 20-3 decision over Oklahoma in one of the biggest wins in Colorado football history. Raising its season record to 8-0 for the first time in sixty-two years, the Buffs gave notice to future opponents that its defense was just as good as its offense. Colorado held the Sooners to only 248 yards of total offense, including completions on only three-of-22 passes in the stiff afternoon breeze at Memorial Stadium.

For much of the first half, it appeared the game might end in a scoreless tie. Each team gained only 43 yards of total offense in the first stanza. Midway through the second quarter, though, the Buffs put together a drive of 50 yards in 11 plays, with Ken Culbertson connecting from 30 yards out to give the Buffs a 3-0 lead, their first lead over Oklahoma in 13 years.

(I’ll pause for a moment to let you read that again. You read it right – it was the Buffs first lead over Oklahoma in 13 years).

October 21, 1989 – Boulder #3 Colorado 49, Kansas 17

The largest Homecoming crowd in the Bill McCartney era, 50,057, witnessed the methodical dismantling of the Jayhawks as the Buffs rolled to a 49-17 win. Starting for the injured Eric Bieniemy, senior tailback J.J. Flannigan ran for 178 yards and three touchdowns, including two in the second quarter as Colorado built a 21-3 halftime advantage. Before Kansas was allowed to score its two consolation touchdowns in the fourth, Colorado had built the lead to 42-3.

The 482 yards of total offense was becoming expected of the Colorado offense. After scoring once in the first quarter, on a 13-yard run by Darian Hagan midway through the quarter, Colorado proceeded to score 14 points in each of the remaining three quarters. While not treated to an exciting finish, Buff fans were at least entertained by Flannigan, who put an end to any lingering doubts about the Colorado running game without Bieniemy. Flannigan had touchdown runs of four and 41 yards in the second quarter, then a 64-yard score in the third quarter before taking his 178-effort to the bench in the fourth quarter. November 19th – Boulder Colorado 56, Kansas State 14

The Buffs had much to play for in the season finale against Kansas State, and, unlike the lethargic effort against Iowa State which had followed the disappointing loss to Oklahoma, the Buffs came out smoking against the hapless Wildcats. J.J. Flannigan scored the Buffs= first touchdown on Colorado=s opening possession. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 21-0, Buffs, and the rout was on. By the end of the day, Colorado had a satisfying 56-14 win.

Flannigan, playing for the injured Eric Bieniemy, set a new personal best of 151 yards and three touchdowns. In all, Colorado amassed 555 yards of total offense, the best effort to date in the McCartney era. Numerous substitutes were given significant playing time, as Colorado was on top, 35-7, by halftime. Sophomore quarterback Marc Walters connected on only four-of-six passes in the second half, with two going for touchdowns. The first was a nine-yard pass to senior tight end Tom Stone, the second a 90-yard bomb to wide receiver Jeff Campbell. While it was not a surprise that Stone=s touchdown catch was the first…

October 11th – @ Missouri Colorado 17, Missouri 12

The bye week between the non-conference slate and the commencement of Big Eight play could not have come at a better time for the Colorado Buffs. The Buffs were reeling at 0-4, though they could easily have been 3-1. “It (the bye week) gives us a chance to regroup and get a new perspective on the season”, said Coach Bill McCartney, “I think we need to regroup emotionally as much as anything.”

Whatever the coaching staff devised to rejuvenate the team, it worked.

Playing more like the 1985 team which had won seven games, the offense and defense came off of the Buffs’ week off to play well during the same game for the first time all season. Mark Hatcher and O.C. Oliver both scored in the second quarter with runs of 27 and five yards, respectively, to give Colorado all of the points it would need in a 17-12 victory.

Oliver’s touchdown run was set up by a trick play. On fourth-and-one at the Buffs’ own 29 yard line, punter Barry Helton threw a pass to safety Mickey Pruitt for a 17-yard gain. “You gotta take chances when you’re 0-4″,…

September 14th – Boulder Colorado 21, Oregon 17

Colorado ran its season record to 2-0 for the first time since 1978 with an exciting 21-17 win over the Oregon Ducks in Boulder. The Buffs offense made it look easy in the first quarter, racing to a 14-0 lead. Sophomore fullback Anthony Weatherspoon scored on a ten-yard run, followed shortly thereafter by a three yard touchdown run by quarterback Mark Hatcher.

After the quick start, though, Oregon dominated through the middle quarters, forging a 17-14 advantage early in the fourth quarter.

Then the game really got interesting.

Quarterback Mark Hatcher scored on a 22-yard run early in the fourth quarter to put the Buffs back on top, 21-17. After that, the defense was asked to take over. Specifically, the game, and the fragile confidence of Colorado’s young team, came down to the play of two sophomore defensive backs, David Tate and Mickey Pruitt.

With the Buffs holding on to a tenuous four-point lead after Hatcher’s run, Oregon drove down the field. The drive was thwarted, however, by an interception by David Tate at the Buffs’ 10 yard line. After the pick, the Buffs were held deep in their own territory and were…

November 13th – Boulder Colorado 28, Kansas 3

In Colorado’s seventh home game of the year, the Buffs finally put things together. On the game’s second play from scrimmage, Colorado quarterback Steve Vogel, having earned the start based on his second half efforts against Missouri, tossed a short screen pass to halfback Richard Johnson. 77 yards later, the Buffs had a 7-0 lead less than a minute into the game. “It’s fair to say that play set the tone for the rest of the game,” said Bill McCartney after the game.

The remainder of the contest was the Richard Johnson show. The senior, playing in his final game at Folsom Field, scored all of the Buffs’ touchdowns in the 28-3 win. In addition to the 77-yard touchdown catch and run, Johnson scored on a 13-yard pass from Vogel late in the first quarter; on a five yard pass in the third quarter; and on a two yard run with 4:49 left in the game. Johnson finished with 102 yards rushing on 21 carries, and 95 yards receiving on just three (all for touchdowns) catches. With another five yards in receptions, Johnson would have become the first Buff in Colorado history…
