Nebraska closes Big 12 book with two consecutive losses
In reviewing the slate of bowl games involving 2011 Colorado opponents, it appeared that Washington was the surest bet to head into the fall campaign with a loss. After all, Washington was only 6-6 on the season, including a 56-21 loss, at home, to 10-3 Nebraska. The Huskies were solid two-touchdown underdogs to the Cornhuskers as the Holiday Bowl kicked off.
So naturally, Washington won, 19-7. Husky tailback Chris Polk out-rushed the vaunted Nebraska rushing crew all by himself, out-gaining the Cornhuskers, 177 yards to 91. “We just ran right at ‘em,” said Polk. “We knew we could win if we ran the way we know how to run. They couldn’t stop it. We whupped a team which didn’t respect us.”
After surrendering 533 total yards in the September game in Seattle, the Huskies held Nebraska to 189 total yards.
The loss left the Big 12 with a 1-4 bowl record, with Oklahoma State’s win over Arizona the only victory (Texas Tech, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma still have bowl games to play). As for Nebraska, the Cornhuskers finished the season with only one win in their final four…

September 18, 2010 – Boulder Colorado 31, Hawai’i 13
Alfred Williams couldn’t have done it any better himself.
Perhaps inspired by the halftime ceremonies honoring the Colorado All-American’s induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, the Buffs turned a 10-0 halftime deficit into a 31-13 rout of Hawai’i. Quarterback Tyler Hansen passed for 200 yards and two touchdowns, while Brian Lockridge and Rodney Stewart both rushed for over 100 yards as Colorado erased a poor first half showing with a dominant second half performance in the Buffs’ 2010 home opener.
Before many of the 47,840 in attendance had settled into their seats, the Hawai’i Warriors set about making sure Buff fans did not forget the 52-7 rout handed to the Buffs by Cal seven days earlier. On the second play of the game, Hawai’i quarterback Bryant Moniz hit Kealoha Pilares on a crossing route which turned into an 80 yard gain. Jimmy Smith caught Pilares at the Colorado three yard line, but a Warrior score, and another Colorado debacle, seemed imminent.
Then Hawai’i did Colorado a huge favor.
The Warriors ran the ball.
A week after rushing for only ten yards against Army, the Warriors decided to run the ball against the Buffs. Three…

[The 1999 Buffs finished the regular season with a 6-5 record. Under first year head coach Gary Barnett, CU had a year with highs and lows. The Buffs started the season with a #14 ranking. A humbling loss in the opener, 41-14, to CSU, however, dropped Colorado from the rankings for the remainder of the season. Encouraging wins over Missouri (46-39 in CU’s first-ever overtime game) and #24 Oklahoma (38-24) were offset by disappointing losses to Washington (31-24 against former head coach Rick Neuheisel) and #6 Kansas State (20-14). The final regular season game was a microcosm of the season: the Buffs fell behind #3 Nebraska, 27-3, through three quarters of play. Three fourth quarter touchdowns by CU sent the game into overtime, where the Buffs ultimately fell, 33-30.]
A Good Loss
While the Buffs and their fans were still mourning the lost opportunity of the final moments of the Nebraska game, some good did come from the loss. Nebraska had come into the CU game ranked third in the Bowl Championship Series standings, behind undefeated Florida State and Virginia Tech. The Cornhuskers needed a convincing win over the Buffs, along with a win over Texas in the Big XII…

November 12th – @ Kansas #7 Colorado 51, Kansas 26
Kordell Stewart, who had the previous week become the first player in Big Eight history to pass for 6,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in a career, piled up 249 yards of total offense against the Jayhawks as the Buffs rolled to an easy 51-26 win. Stewart’s 51-yard pass to Michael Westbrook in the game’s opening drive paved the way for a 17-yard touchdown run by Rashaan Salaam as the Buffs sprinted to an early 7-0 lead on their way to a 24-7 halftime cushion.
On the day, Colorado posted 639 yards on offense, the seventh highest total in team history. Rashaan Salaam rushed for 232 yards and three scores in becoming the Buffs’ single-season record holder for rushing yards (passing Eric Bieniemy’s 1,628 yards in 1990), touchdowns (Bobby Anderson – 18 in 1969), and points (Byron “Whizzer” White – 122 in 1937). Not to be outdone, two Buff receivers placed their names in the record books as well. Michael Westbrook, who had six catches for 117 yards against Kansas, passed Charles Johnson (1991-93) to become the Buffs’ all-time leading receiver, while tight end Christian Fauria passed Dave Hestera (1981-83)…

December 25th – @ Aloha Bowl, Honolulu, Hawaii #17 Colorado 41, #25 Fresno State 30
While the Buffs found no snow on the ground on Christmas Day, 1993, they did find presents there.
Colorado’s defense forced four Fresno State fumbles, converting all four turnovers into points as the Buffs ran away from the Bulldogs, 41-30, to win the 12th-annual Aloha Bowl. Sophomore tailback Rashaan Salaam rushed for 135 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Buffs’ offense, while the depleted Colorado secondary withstood 523 yards passing by Fresno State’s Trent Dilfer. “It’s sweet,” said head coach Bill McCartney. “It’s what we wanted to accomplish when we redesigned our goals after losing to Nebraska. We wanted to close the season with three straight wins, go to a bowl, and bring back a trophy.”
At the outset, it looked like the Buffaloes from the Big Eight were interested in finishing off the Bulldogs early in order to get to the beach by early afternoon (kickoff was at 10:45 a.m., local time). On the Buffs’ first possession (after Chris Hudson had stripped Dilfer of the ball on the game’s opening drive), Stewart directed the Buffs on an eight-play, 53-yard drive culminated in a Salaam…

Colorado v. Syracuse – Fiesta Bowl – January 1, 1993
Lost Luggage, Lost Jacket, Lost Holiday
I had never been to Phoenix before. In fact, unless you count stepping across the state line at the Four Corners area which represents the intersection of the borders of Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, I had never been to Arizona before. Coming at the end of December, a trip to the Fiesta Bowl to cap off the 1992 season seemed like a great idea.
My trip got off to a bad start when my luggage failed to meet me at the Phoenix airport. Fortunately, my hosts for my first evening in Phoenix, Kyle and Kim, were more than hospitable in taking care of my needs until the next day when my wayward luggage decided to complete its journey.
(Author’s Note: Allow me to digress. Kyle and Kim were floormates of mine from my freshman year in Libby Hall. In fact, Kyle was the first person I met in Boulder. I was carrying up some boxes to my dorm room my first day in town when Kyle strolled down the hallway, stuck out his large hand, and, in a voice which was…

November 21st – Boulder #11 Colorado 31, Iowa State 10
Kordell Stewart threw for three touchdowns and 279 yards as the Buffs raced out to a 28-3 halftime lead before cruising to a 31-10 win over Iowa State.
The Buffs put the Cyclones on notice early that Colorado would not fall victim to the complacency which had cost the Cornhuskers. Linebacker Chad Brown recovered a fumble by Iowa State fullback Chris Ulrich on the Cyclones’ first possession. On the very next play from scrimmage, Stewart connected with fullback James Hill on a 19-yard score, and Colorado was ahead to stay, 7-0.
After Iowa State cut the Buffs’ lead to 7-3, the Buffs scored three touchdowns over a nine-minute span in the second quarter to make the second half irrelevant. First Stewart hit Michael Westbrook for 24 yards and a 14-3 lead. Next, Stewart connected with tight end Christian Fauria from one-yard out and a 21-3 advantage. Finally, Lamont Warren took it in from three yards to finish off a nine-play, 82-yard drive, and the Buffs were dominating, 28-3.
Stewart’s 279 passing yards gave him 2,109 for the year, the first time in Colorado history a Buff quarterback had surpassed the 2,000-yard…

September 5th –Boulder #12 Colorado 37, Colorado State 17
The 1992 season-opener had all the makings of a disaster.
The Colorado/Colorado State game was the renewal of an intra-state rivalry, which always meant a hard-fought game. In addition, the Buffs were risking state and national embarrassment if their new offense failed to produce against a Colorado State squad which had stumbled to a 3-8 record in 1991. To the relief of many Buff fans, though, the Colorado offense did not disappoint. Head Coach Bill McCartney looked like a genius as the Buffs came away with a 37-17 win in the 1992 opener for both teams.
Sophomore quarterback Kordell Stewart, having earned the starting nod over junior Vance Joseph, smashed a ten-year old team passing record by throwing for 409 yards in completing 21-of-36 attempts. The previous high for any Buff quarterback had been Randy Essington’s 361-yard effort in Colorado’s 40-14 loss to Nebraska in 1982. Stewart contributed an additional 21 yards on the ground for an all-purpose tally of 430 yards, breaking the record of 353 yards held by Bobby Anderson for 24 seasons. “I’m just happy to get a game under my belt,” said Stewart after the Colorado State contest. …
