Spencer Dinwiddie ranked as the No. 5 shooting guard by The Sporting News

From the Sporting NewsThe Sporting News has ranked the best shooting guards in the nation for the upcoming season. CU junior guard Spencer Dinwiddie has been rated as the 5th-best. TSN’s write-up on Dinwiddie:

There are times it is hard to tell what position Dinwiddie plays for CU, because there are so few things he cannot master on the court. He passes (3.0 assists), shoots (89 3-pointers in two seasons) and rebounds (3.2 per game). He spends an absurd amount of time at the foul line because of his ability to drive the ball. Dinwiddie could, if he can recover his long-distance accuracy, become the most feared scorer in the Pac-12 and a prime pick in a future NBA draft.

Tad Boyle, on CU getting into the 2013 NCAA tournament: “We can’t ever take this for granted” …

For the third year in a row, Selection Sunday for the NCAA men’s basketball tournament involved the University of Colorado.

Two seasons ago, the 21-13 Buffs, fresh off of a good showing in the Big 12 tournament and a record-setting 18 home victories, were stunned when they were not selected for the NCAA tournament. Colorado players had to console themselves with a run to the NIT semi-finals, finishing with a school-record 24 victories.

Last season, the Buffs removed any doubts about an NCAA bid, going on a four-game winning streak through the Pac-12 tournament, earning the conference’s first men’s basketball title and an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. An upset of UNLV took the Buffs to the NCAA third round, and a second consecutive 24-win season.

This season, the consensus amongst the bracketologists is that the University of Colorado was a “lock” to make the tournament again. With a 21-11 record, a 39th-rated RPI ranking and a No. 22 Strength of Schedule ranking, there was little “bubble” talk about the Buffs. The bid marked only the …

Perspective

Perspective

Perspective – defined in the dictionary as a “point of view”, the choice of a context for opinions, beliefs and experiences.

It certainly is strange how one’s perspective can change when considering your team, and its relative position in sports world.

It struck me Friday morning how quickly our views, our perspective, can change. After the CU men’s basketball team took down No. 9 Arizona, 71-58, on Thursday night, to move to 17-7 for the season, the internet conversation about how March would play out for the Buffs quickly shifted. Rather than look at the “Bubble watch” postings on the internet basketball websites, the search was for “Bracketology”, to see where the “Bracketologists” (are these even words?) had slotted the Buffs.

In the view of many basketball observers, the Buffs, with a 3-2 record against ranked teams, and stellar RPI and Strength of Schedule rankings, are a team which is likely to make the NCAA tournament in March. Hold serve in the “winnable” games, and perhaps pick off a road win in the last road trip (to the Bay area), and the Buffs will not have to be nervous on Selection Sunday.

The chatter on the internet sites …

Once Bitten, Twice Shy

Once Bitten, Twice Shy

The Mike MacIntyre era at the University of Colorado is all of two months old, far too early to draw any conclusions about how things will turn out for the former San Jose State head coach. But it’s not too early to draw some conclusions about how the Buff Nation is receiving the new coach and his staff.

Reserving judgment would be one way to put it.

Once bitten, twice shy would be another.

Compared to the last few hires at CU, the reception for Mike MacIntyre has been muted. Polite applause for the new coach, rather than a standing ovation. Golf claps from the “patrons” at Augusta, if you will, rather than the rowdy cheers of the crowd at the 16th hole at the Phoenix Open.

This is not to say that Buff fans are not hopeful, even optimistic.

It’s just that we’ve been there, done that … and been burned.

The hire

Rick Neuheisel was a surprise choice to be the next CU head coach in 1995, but the hire was met with general enthusiasm. Neuheisel, though, took over a team which won 11 games in 1994, and had finished ranked No. 3 …

Jimmy Smith: “I’m glad to be representing the Buffaloes” in the Super Bowl

From cubuffs.com … For most NFL players, the idea of playing in the Super Bowl is only a dream, but for Jimmy Smith, it’s reality. In only his second year in the National Football League, Smith will participate in his sport’s biggest event – and arguably the sporting world’s biggest.

Smith, a former cornerback at the University of Colorado, already has competed in five playoff games, including two AFC Championships. His 29th career game will come on the biggest stage of all when Super Bowl XLVII kicks off on Sunday in New Orleans.

“Having the opportunity to play in the AFC championship game last year really prepares you for such a big moment,” Smith said in a telephone interview for CUBuffs.com. “And then going out there again this year, you don’t get the same feeling because you have already been there.”

Smith, now 24, is accustomed to contributing at a young age. As a freshman at CU he played in all 13 games during a season (2007) that included a trip to the Independence Bowl, contributing largely on special teams and …

Introducing Dave Forman, Director of Sports Performance

From cubuffs.com … There are a couple of things you’ll notice (or won’t) in the strength and conditioning domain at the University of Colorado under new guy Dave Forman.

There won’t be a “big lift board” – no names posted alongside outlandish numbers in the bench press, squat or whatever. There will be piped in tunes, but probably not Metallica. And for additional purposes of improved perception, there will be assistant coaches wearing CU shirts with collars. No muscle T’s with cut out sleeves, please.

Oh, and Forman won’t slip you a business card identifying him as Director of Speed, Strength and Conditioning. Rather, it will read Director of Sports Performance.

Why the changes? Let Forman explain:

“The change to sports performance, while it might seem like semantics, I think it better reflects the all-encompassing aspects of performance and what we’re trying to do. We’re more than just running around and lifting heavy weights. There are the aspects of recovery, there’s crossover with what the athletic training staff does – and not just in a rehab setting but in reconditioning, where maybe you’re out of rehab …

CU recruit has buzzer beater waved off

Guess Jaron Hopkins is learning – the hard way – what it’s like to be a Buff …

From azcentral.com … Gilbert boys basketball coach Jay Caserio knew Friday night’s Division I matchup against Mesa Dobson would be a tight one, but no one could predict an ending this dramatic.

With 1.1 seconds remaining in the game and Gilbert leading by a point, Dobson’s Jaron Hopkins (a CU commit) caught a long pass from center court and laid in a last-chance, buzzer shot from underneath the basket. No sooner did the visiting crowd erupt than was bucket was called off, with officials saying it didn’t beat the buzzer.

The controversial call meant victory for Gilbert, which defeated Dobson for the second time in two weeks, winning 58-57 Friday at home.

“To be honest with you I think that should have probably been a bucket there at the end,” Caserio said. “I think it was kind of stolen from them.”

Oregon star likely out for CU game next Thursday

From CBSSportsline … Oregon freshman point guard Dominic Artis will miss at least the next two games with …
