Stoppin’ by for a Visit – January 28th

One last visitor?

Wednesday, February 1st is Signing Day. Most of the recruits for the Class of 2012 will sign their Letters of Intent, and recruiting Classes will be assessed.

But February 1st is the first day of the Signing period – not the last.

Which leads us to the story of Jontrey Tillman. Rivals bio

Tillman is a 5’9″, 170-pound athlete from Baldwin, Louisiana. Tillman has been a Stanford commit since last June, but now finds himself looking for a college home after he was informed by Stanford, the school to which he, his 4.0 GPA and 26 ACT score had been committed for six months, that he had not been accepted.

“It was a crushing thing for this kid,” said his high school coach Ryan Antoine. “He’s going to take some time to heal, and then find some place he can love again.”

Tillman is not going to commit on Signing Day, and may take several official visits. He has offers from schools like Northwestern, Kansas, and Memphis. Tillman took his first official visit to Houston last weekend, and may visit Colorado as early as this weekend. A trip to …

Stoppin’ by for a Visit – January 20th

UPDATE (1/22):  A good time was apparently had by all this weekend by the eight official visitors.

In addition to enjoying a Chamber of Commerce 65-degree day, the prospects watched some of the East/West Shrine game (in which Buff quarterback Tyler Hansen played well, thank you very much), before heading off on a Banjo Billy’s Bus to the Arizona game. The group, though, reportedly left at halftime, missing out on the great comeback win by the CU men’s basketball team.

Wide receiver commit Peyton Williams is still on crutches following his surgery, but apparently is progressing well and on schedule. Quarterback Shane Dillon remains a firm commit – and it was perfect timing for Tyler Hansen to play well with Dillon and his family in town.

Of the official visitors who are not committed to the Buffs, there was no indication that they will be committing to Colorado immediately (i.e., this weekend). Prize linebacker recruit Seth Jacobs was in town with his family, and, according to a reliable source, had a great time. Jacobs was on the fourth of his five official visits (he’s been to Arizona, Arkansas, and Oklahoma …

Stoppin’ by for a visit – January 13th

January 15th – Update – When all was said and done, only four players made it to Boulder for their official visits, with one, running back Davien Payne, already a Colorado commit. The others who were in Boulder were tight end Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick, defensive back Chris Solomon, and defensive back Jeffrey Hall. I have it from several sources that Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick, a four-star recruit who committed to USC last summer, was given special attention from the coaches, particularly head coach Jon Embree. Whether or not JC-F found the “family” atmosphere he was reportedly seeking remains to be seen. (Even if he was impressed, he still has an official visit to USC scheduled for next weekend, so the USC coaches will have the last opportunity to sway Cope-Fitzpatrick to remain with Trojans). As to the other two uncommitted players, three-star defensive back Chris Solomon, I’ve been told, had a great time and may well become a Buff this week.

Up Next – With only two recruiting weekends left before Signing Day (Wednesday, February 1st), the Buffs will be pulling out all the stops in a last minute attempt to …

Recruiting Notebook – Defense

Continuing on in our review of each unit on the Colorado roster, we turn our attention to the defense. This week: The secondary (Defensive line and linebackers review posted below)

Defensive Backs

Players LostSeniors Anthony Perkins, Jonathan Hawkins, Arthur Jaffee, Brian Lockridge, and Travis Sandersfeld. After earning 26 starts at safety, Anthony Perkins suffered a high ankle sprain nine snaps into the Oregon game on October 22nd. It appeared that Perkins’ career was over, as he missed the next four games. Determined to go out with his uniform on, though, Perkins made it back into the lineup for the season finale, not only starting, but leading the Buffs with ten tackles in the 17-14 victory over Utah. Despite playing in only nine games this past fall, Perkins finished tied with fellow safety Ray Polk for second place on the team with 80 tackles.

The other four senior defensive backs contributed to different degrees. Travis Sandersfeld appeared in as many career games as Perkins (38), but had less than half as many starts (11). Sandersfeld was also injured for much of 2011, missing six games, but also finished strong, posting ten tackles against …

Pac-12 Notes – December

Washington out-scored by Baylor in wild Alamo Bowl

When the calendar turned to November, Washington was sitting pretty, with a 6-2 overall record, 4-1 in Pac-12 play. The Huskies’ only losses were to nationally ranked Nebraska and Stanford. Washington had been ranked as high as No. 21, and, with a win at home over nationally ranked Oregon, would be in the conversation for the Pac-12 North title.

A 34-17 loss to the Ducks, though, put in motion a 1-3 November, including losses to USC and Oregon State. Instead of competing for a title, Washington was left to take on No. 12 Baylor in the Alamo Bowl, limping in with a 7-5 record.

The record-setting 67-56 bowl game set numerous records, including the most total touchdowns (17) and most total combined yards (1,397) in bowl game history. On the positive side, Washington sophomore quarterback Keith Price had a monster game, throwing for 438 yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for three more scores. Still, it had to be painful for Washington fans, as Heisman trophy winner Robert Griffin III led the Bears to 777 yards of total offense – and wasn’t particularly effective. Three Baylor running backs ran for …

Embree talks recruiting

B.G. Brooks of cubuffs.com did an interview with Colorado head coach Jon Embree, which is important enough to reproduce in its entirety here …

1.    CUBuffs.com: The current dead period ends Jan. 4, and I’m assuming you’ll hit the road immediately. What direction will you head?

Jon Embree: “That’s right . . . and I’m heading West, to Hawaii and California. It’ll be my first trip to Hawaii and second to California.”

•2.    CUBuffs.com: What’s the biggest difference in this recruiting season and last – taking into account the full season you’ve had as opposed to last year?

JE: “The biggest difference is that a year ago, …

RECRUITING NOTEBOOK – OFFENSE

Quarterbacks

Player Lost – Senior Tyler Hansen. In his up-and-down career at Colorado, Hansen played in 33 games, starting 28. Hansen’s numbers, which will have to be replaced next fall: 872 pass attempts (3rd on the CU all-time list); 505 completions (3rd); 5,705 passing yards (4th); 36 touchdown passes (4th), and 6,183 yards of total offense (4th).

Players ReturningNick Hirschman (So.*), John Schrock (R-Fr.*), Stevie Joe Dorman (R-Fr.*), Brent Burnette (Sr.*), and Connor Wood (So.*) – Of the three, only Nick Hirschman saw any action in 2011. Hirschman played in five games, earning the first start of his career against Arizona State. Hirschman’s stats for 2011: 18-for-35 passing, for 192 yards, no touchdowns or interceptions.

*denotes status for the 2012 season.

Commitments for the Class of 2012

While technically not a member of the recruiting Class of 2012, transfer Connor Wood still deserves mention here. Wood was a member of the high school recruiting Class of 2010, committing to play for Texas. Wood did not play for the Longhorns, opting to transfer instead. Wood enrolled in school in Boulder in late August, and will be eligible (three seasons remaining) come the start of …
