— September 14th – Boulder          No. 17 USC 40, No. 18 Colorado 3 — Robert Hodge became the only the second Colorado quarterback since 1959 to make his starting debut as a senior, as he led the Buffs onto the field to face the Trojans of USC. In 1976, senior Jeff Austin made his debut against Texas Tech, only to lose, 24-7. Hodge fared no better, as the Buffs were completely dominated by USC, 40-3. — September 7th – Boulder          No. 17 Colorado 34, San Diego State 14 — The Buffs survived the loss of quarterback Craig Ochs to injury to win their home-opener against San Diego State, 34-14. Ochs suffered a concussion late in the second quarter and did not return. Senior quarterback Robert Hodge teamed with a “bend-but-don’t-break” Colorado defense in the second half to help the Buffs pull away from the Aztecs. — O-fer Openers — Colorado’s 2002 opening game against Colorado State has several positive and several negative numbers with which Buff fans had to contend. On the positive side, there was the fact that since 1946, Colorado was 9-0 in opening games against teams which had already played. Before suiting up against the Buffs, the CSU Rams played the Virginia Cavaliers in the Jim Thorpe Classic. The Rams won that game, 35-29, and were close to entering the polls after the win.   National and Big 12 Recap Ohio State won its fifth national title at the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, defeating Miami, 31-24, in two overtimes. The 2nd-ranked Buckeyes, 13-point underdogs to the Hurricanes, were led by freshman running back Maurice Clarett. Clarett scored on a five-yard run in Ohio State’s second overtime possession, and when Miami quarterback Ken Dorsey’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete, the 14-0 Buckeyes were the nation’s only undefeated team.
