What to take from the 2010 Recruiting cycle

Colorado head coach Dan Hawkins opened his Signing Day press conference with an acknowledgement that he really had very little to add to the discussion about the 21-player Class of 2010. There were very few in the room, and indeed, on the internet, who were not already very familiar with the players Hawkins was sitting down to discuss. “Probably, in this day and age,” said Hawkins, “every coach should just get up and say, ‘well, what do you think?’. Pretty much everyone knows who you have.”

It’s true. We did know all about the Colorado Class of 2010 before Dan Hawkins sat down around 3:30 p.m. Signing Day afternoon.

More’s the pity.

There were few surprises for Colorado on Signing Day, 2010. Quarterback Munchie Legaux defected, but that was not completely unexpected. Legaux had been a “soft verbal” for two months, taking official visits to Arizona and Cincinnati before settling on the Bearcats on Wednesday. Tight end Harold Mobley had not been an official verbal, but had been a “strong lean” to Colorado for several months. His choice came down to Colorado and Nevada (though, for much of the fall, Mobley expressed…

Class of 2010 – Defense / Special Teams

Defensive End Kirk Poston

The commitment from defensive end Kirk Poston from Houston, Texas, came back in December. Poston is 6’2″, 235-pounds, and is listed as a three-star defensive end prospect, who had offers from Kansas State and Baylor from the Big 12, as well as from Georgia Tech, Duke, Arizona, and Houston.

“I really liked (defensive line coach Romeo) Bandison”, Poston told BuffStampede.com. “We talked about me playing outside, or gaining weight and playing inside. I like playing outside better, but it really doesn’t matter much to me.” In his senior season, Poston registered 13 sacks in 12 games for Houston’s St. Pius X high school. His team made it to the state semi-finals in 2009.

Poston looks to be ready to play for the Buffs as early as this fall. “I’d really like to play as soon as possible,” said Poston after his commitment. “I’d like to play definitely during my sophomore year, but if I play during my freshman year, that would be fine, too.” Poston plans to study business at CU. He reported that academics were a key component in his decision. “I really liked the whole…

Colorado Class of 2010 – Offense

Wide receiver Donnie Duncan

Donnie Duncanis a wide receiver/athlete from Hamilton High school in Los Angeles, California. Duncan is a little taller than some of the other Buff receivers, coming in at 6’0″, 185 pounds, with a 4.6 timing in the 40 yard dash. The services don’t agree on Duncan, with Rivals seeing him as a three-star player, rating him as the 72nd-best “athlete”, while Scout sees Duncan as only a two-star prospect, the 148th-rated wide receiver nationally.

For the Hamilton Yankees in 2009, Duncan scored 12 touchdowns, playing cornerback, wide receiver, and kick returner. “I liked everything about Colorado,” said Duncan of his official visit November 6th. “It wasn’t what I expected going into the trip. I felt real comfortable, real quick.”

Buff fans will have to keep an eye on Duncan, to make sure he qualifies. “Coach Hagan just keeps telling me to focus on my grades, so I will be eligible,” Duncan told BuffStampede.com in December. “I will show up in game shape and everything, but they just want sure I take care of my grades so that it is not a problem.”

Just so you know, Duncan’s high school,…

Markques Simas suspended

Before we can get to the fun speculation about Colorado joining the Pac-10, we still have to deal with the grim reality which is the present state of the Colorado Buffaloes football program. On Friday, it was announced that wide receiver Markques Simas has been suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. The junior-to-be had given the sagging Colorado passing game a glimmer of hope, posting three 100-yard games in the final four outings of 2009 (in the fourth game, Simas had 92 receiving yards).

“This is obviously disappointing, but we’re going to continue to emphasize our philosophy of excellence with class, and we will uphold our standards,” said Dan Hawkins in a released statement.

There was no mention in the release as to what team rules Simas violated, however, the Boulder Daily Camera has obtained a police report indicating that Simas was arrested for driving under the influence early Friday morning. Simas was pulled over for making an illegal U-turn, with blood alcohol tests revealing a BAC of .138, well over the legal .08 level.

No duration for the suspension has been set, but it may be lengthy. Simas missed his chance at playing as…

Running backs’ coach optimistic despite lack of experience

Recruiting new running backs was certainly a priority for the Colorado coaching staff this past off-season.

Two years ago, recruiting running backs for the Class of 2010 would not have seemed a likely priority.

Two years ago, Colorado appeared to be set for the next four/five seasons in the offensive  backfield. True, Hugh Charles had graduated, but the Buffs were stocked with young talent. Brian Lockridge, Demetrius Sumler, and Arthur Jaffee were all young and returning, and Colorado had recruited three new backs:

Darrell Scott was the highest ranked running back prospect in the nation, and was heralded as a signing day coup for Colorado; Ray Polk was not too far behind Scott in the eyes of the recruiting scouts (the 11th-ranked running back overall according to Rivals.com; and there was the signing day bonus of Rodney Stewart, who could be counted on to return kicks if he couldn’t find his way into the backfield.

What a difference two years make.

First, Ray Polk left the team – well, at least the offene, moving to safety in the spring of 2009. Then Darrell Scott left the team in November, followed by Demetrius Sumler in December. Of those left…

12:00 p.m. - The Colorado Recruiting Class of 2010 may be all in, as wide receiver/athlete Donnie Duncan has been confirmed as the 21st member of the Class. Earlier, the CU athletic department stated it would not announce the class until all the letters of intent were in, and now the signees have been posted at www.cubuffs.com. While there may be some players to come in later, it would be inconsistent with the statement issued this morning. As a result, the class may be final, with the Buffs signing only five defensive players (plus a kicker).

The breakdown (with the acknowledgement that a number of recruits played a number of positions in high school, and they may be moved around once they get to Boulder): one quarterback; four running backs, two wide receivers; four tight ends; four offensive linemen; two defensive linemen; two linebackers; one defensive back; and a kicker. Nineteen are coming from high school; two from junior colleges. Brief bios (to be supplemented in coming days) have been posted on each player elsewhere on the website.

Thanks for checking in with the Ticker today. If there is more news this afternoon, I’ll let you know!
