No. 11 Oklahoma – No Reason to Be Nervous

// Oct 30 -

October 30th – @Oklahoma               No. 11 Oklahoma 43, Colorado 10

Colorado made its last visit as a member of the Big 12 to storied Owen Field to take on the No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners. In the long, successful history of its football program, Oklahoma had never before had a 34-game home winning streak, but had just such a streak heading into the game against the Buffs. In the long, relatively successful history of its football program, Colorado had never before had a 14-game road losing streak, but had just such a streak heading into the game against the Sooners.

Result? Predictable: Oklahoma 43; Colorado 10.

Quarterback Landry Jones threw for a career-high 453 yards and four touchdowns, while wide receiver Ryan Broyles set a school record with 208 yards receiving in the rout of Colorado. Overall, when combined with the 35 yards passing by backup Drew Allen, the 488 yards passing by Oklahoma also set a new school record. Colorado also set a new school record, but in the Buffs’ case it was an inglorious one, as Colorado lost for the 15th-straight time on the road, and lost its 11th straight conference game.

The first quarter was a prelude of what was…

It was Saturday night. The team was on the road, playing before a national television audience. The team had actually had recent success against its opponent, but the historical record was on the side of the home team.

It was a big game for both teams, but for different reasons. One had national title aspirations; the other was looking for respect.

The fan was pensive, concerned. In a word:  nervous.

Of course I’m talking about my son-in-law, Mac, an Oregon alumnus and fan, who was nervous about his No. 1 Ducks going into the Los Angeles Coliseum to face the USC Trojans. Everyone in Portland was worried about the USC game, as every game when you’re the top ranked team is a potential pitfall. Every game can “end” a season. Every opponent is gunning for you. With the Trojans banned from bowl participation due to NCAA sanctions, this was the Trojans’ bowl game. Mac had every reason to be nervous.

I, on the other hand, was not.

There used to be a time when I could not eat before a CU game. I was so pent up with energy that there was no way I could keep down any food,…

There have been comparisons of late between the state of the Colorado football program under Dan Hawkins to the state of the program when Chuck Fairbanks was the head coach.

There certainly are similarities.

Chuck Fairbanks was the Buffs’ head coach from 1979 to 1981. In his three years in Boulder, he compiled a 7-26 record. Among the more notable disasters during Fairbanks’ tenure were back-to-back home losses to Drake; four shutout losses (44-0 to LSU; 59-0 to Nebraska; 49-0 to Oklahoma; and 27-0 to Kansas, the latter three all in 1981); the infamous Sports Illustrated article about Fairbanks’ remodeled office during a time when CU was cutting baseball and wrestling; and, of course, the record-setting 82-42 loss to Oklahoma in 1980.

Dan Hawkins has been the Buffs’ head coach since 2006. In his 4-plus years in Boulder, he has compiled a 19-37 record. Among the more notable disasters during the Hawkins’ tenure have been the home loss to Montana State (in the first-ever game between Colorado and a 1-AA school); two shutout losses (both to Missouri, 58-0 and 26-0, with the former loss bringing an end to a record-setting string of games in which the Buffs had scored, dating…

Fearless Forecasts

If it’s Friday, it must be time for the “Fearless Forecasts”. While the Buffs held up their end of the deal, making the Texas Tech game interesting until the end, I doubt that Fox regretted showing the Iowa State upset of Texas instead of the Texas Tech/Colorado game. As a result, the two-for-three week left the Fearless Forecasts for the year at 17-for-21. We’ll try and do better this week …

- Scotty McKnight will become the first player in Colorado history with 200 career catches … Before Scotty McKnight came along, the career mark for receptions stood at 167, and had been the milestone since Michael Westbrook took off for the NFL after the 1994 season. McKnight broke that record in the opener against CSU, and stands poised to become the first Buff to hit the 200 reception mark. McKnight’s total stands at 196, and the senior has been averaging about four catches per game. Cody Hawkins, before he was passed over in favor of Tyler Hansen, would frequently look for McKnight when he got into trouble with the pass rush. Look for Hawkins to seek out McKnight early and often against Oklahoma …
