Kansas State – “How ’bout Them Buffaloes!”

// Nov 20 -

November 20th – Boulder          Colorado 44, Kansas State 36

Colorado came back from a 14-3 deficit to build a two score halftime lead, then fought off a series of Kansas State challenges to post a well-earned 44-36 victory over Kansas State. Junior running back Rodney Stewart ran for career-high 195 yards, caught two passes for 49 yards, and threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Toney Clemons in leading the Buffs to their second consecutive victory over a Big 12 opponent for the first time since 2007.

The stars seemed aligned for the Buffs to play well against the Wildcats: the weather was cool (37 degrees), but sunny; the Buffs were on a high from winning their first game in the post-Dan Hawkins era; and it was Senior Day, with the players and fans pumped after a pre-game ceremony honoring the out-going seniors.

So, naturally, the Buffs came out and fell flat.

Arthur Jaffee lost the opening kickoff in the sun, and was swarmed under at the Buffs’ 13-yard line after finally collecting the kick. Three offensive plays netted a minus-five yards for the Colorado offense, and Zach Grossnickle’s short (34 yard) punt was returned by Ty Zimmerman 41 yards to the…

“How ’bout them Buffaloes!”

As the long-time linebacker coach for the University of Colorado, Brian Cabral would often greet players and fans after a Buff victory with a hearty, “How ’bout them Buffaloes!”. While familiar to a generation of Buff players, Cabral’s opening his post-game press conference with the same cheer has taken on new meaning.

How ’bout them Buffaloes! With the 44-36 victory over Kansas State, Brian Cabral became just the second Colorado head coach since 1932 to post victories in his first two games (Rick Neuheisel being the other, in 1995). While Cabral still carries the title of “interim” head coach at Colorado, the bandwagon to have him named as the permanent head coach is growing.

Under the “The Next CU Head Coach …” heading at this website, we have taken a look at the resumes of over a dozen potential candidates to replace Dan Hawkins. It is time to add Brian Cabral to the list, if only for what has transpired over the past few weeks …

- Colorado has scored 123 points in the past three games, the best such stretch since the Buffs posted 124 points in three games in 2002. The Buffs have scored…

Preview – Kansas State

For one game, everything went right for the Colorado Buffaloes.

Against Iowa State last Saturday, the offense was efficient, and took advantage of scoring opportunities. Cody Hawkins was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for his 266 yard, three touchdown performance. Rodney Stewart was the workhorse, gaining 123 yards on 36 carries, while freshman wide receiver Paul Richardson posted his second consecutive 100-yard game.

Against Iowa State last Saturday, the defense was dominant, registering eight sacks. The Buffs held Iowa State to a total of minus-six yards rushing, and a season-low 229 yards overall. A week after posting 30 points against the Blackshirts of Nebraska, the Cyclones could only muster 14 points against Colorado.

For a change, even the special teams contributed. The Buffs produced an 89-yard kickoff return and forced a fumble last weekend. Aric Goodman, who struggled early in the year, went two-for-two in field goal attempts.

The Buffs remain at home for the second game of the Brian Cabral regime. Colorado remains mathematically eligible for a bowl bid.

Can Colorado post a second consecutive complete game? We’ll see …

Here are this week’s “T.I.P.S.” for the game:

Confirmed candidates up to three?

Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress has indicated that the NFL team has been contacted “circuitously” by the University of Colorado about interviewing offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. “I do think highly of him,” Childress said of Bieniemy. “I think he can be a coordinator in this league, and I think before it’s over he could be a head coach in this league … We’d hate to lose him, but certainly if he has that opportunity it would be hard to hold him back.”

Another new “official” candidate might be former Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti. Now an ESPN analyst, Bellotti has confirmed that he traveled to Boulder several weeks ago, and has had discussions with Colorado about the job opening. “I will only say that we have had initial contact,” Bellotti told BuffStampede.com. “We have had initial conversations to gauge interest. We will continue to discuss it more. That’s about all I can say.” Bellotti is, in his terms, a “free agent”, and says that he has been contacted by several schools about becoming their head coach, but Colorado is the only school with which he has confirmed speaking. “For me to come back, it would have to be the right job,” said Bellotti.…
