Iowa State – The First Victory of 2011
// Nov 13 -
2010 Season
November 13th – Boulder Colorado 34, Iowa State 14
In the first game of the post-Dan Hawkins era at the University of Colorado, the Buffs played their most complete game of the 2010 season, defeating Iowa State, 34-14. Long-time assistant coach Brian Cabral won his first game as interim coach, as the Buffs held the Cyclones to just 229 yards of total offense.
The game, as almost every game in the 2010 season, began with Colorado on offense. For only the third time all year, though, the Buffs’ opening drive concluded with points. Two Rodney Stewart runs netted 11 yards and a first down before Cody Hawkins threw his first pass since his father was fired as head coach. The play was a simple one, a bubble screen pass to wide receiver Paul Richardson. The freshman wide receiver, though, evaded tacklers and out-raced Iowa State defenders for a 55 yard gain down to the Cyclone 14 yard line. Three more plays netted seven yards, leaving the Buffs with a fourth-and-three at the ISU seven yard line. After first appearing to be ready to go for a first down, head coach Brian Cabral called a time out, and, after discussion, opted…

The First Victory of 2011
The calendar says it is still November, 2010.
The schedule says that there are two games left for the Colorado Buffaloes as a member of the Big 12.
The 4-6 record says that Colorado is still a member of the lower echelon of major college football.
The 34-14 victory over Iowa State, however, was more than the fourth victory of the 2010 season. The win was more than the first conference win of the year. It was better than the first “W” in over a month of play.
It was the first victory of the 2011 season.
The win gives Colorado a chance to look past the last five weeks of frustrating losses, and instead start to look forward. Dan Hawkins finished his career at Boulder with a 19-39 record; interim head coach Brian Cabral started his career 1-0. Colorado played a complete game against Iowa State, with the offense, defense, and even the special teams contributing.
Offense
Want to look for a hero on offense? Look no further than Cody Hawkins at quarterback. Four days after his father was fired, Cody came out and played a strong, consistent, error-free game. Hawkins went 16-for-24 for 266 yards, three…

Colorado/Iowa State Preview
Did it finally happen? Did it really, actually, finally, happen?
Is the Dan Hawkins era at Colorado finally over?
Okay – quickly moving on - who will be the head coach of the Buffs in 2011?
Since the “Collapse in Kansas”, which made the firing of head coach Dan Hawkins all but inevitable, there has been little else discussed when it comes to the Colorado Buffaloes. Bring on 2011 and the Pac-12! Colorado fans are ready for a fresh start; a clean slate …
The thing is, there is a team of players in Ames, Iowa, that is still looking at the calendar, boarding a plane on Friday, and are heading for Boulder. The Iowa State Cyclones, indifferent to the tsunami which has hit Boulder in the past week, are anticipating a game on Saturday afternoon at Folsom Field.
Now that Buff fans do not have Dan Hawkins to kick around anymore (my second Richard Nixon reference of the week. Hmmm …), will the fans show up to cheer on the Buffs and interim coach Brian Cabral? Will the Buffs be prepared? Motivated? Let’s take a look …
Here are this week’s “T.I.P.S.” for the Colorado/Iowa State game:

Colorado fans have a…

Fearless Forecasts
Despite the unfortunate fourth quarter from last week (Is the “Kollapse in Kansas” a good moniker, or should we just do our best to forget the whole thing ever happened?), the Buffs did well enough that the Fearless Forecasts went three-for-three, raising the year-to-date total to 23-for-27. As I have another engagement this evening (See FF No. 2), I will get right to it …
1) Rodney Stewart will become just the 14th Buff in Colorado history to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season. The last Buff to rush for over 1,000 yards was Bobby Purify, who turned the trick with 1,017 yards in 2004. Speedy needs 83 yards to pull off the four-digit accomplishment. This would seem to be an easy task in light of Stewart’s 175 yards against Kansas last weekend, but bear in mind that in the last two home games, Stewart rushed for 34 yards (v. Texas Tech), and 85 yards (v. Baylor). With preparations this week nothing like what you would expect in a normal week, it would behoove the Buffs to go back to basics – and nothing is more basic than handing the ball off…
