2010 – Hawai’i – Eight minutes of Emulation

// Sep 18 -

September 18, 2010 – Boulder          Colorado 31, Hawai’i 13

Alfred Williams couldn’t have done it any better himself.

Perhaps inspired by the halftime ceremonies honoring the Colorado All-American’s induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, the Buffs turned a 10-0 halftime deficit into a 31-13 rout of Hawai’i. Quarterback Tyler Hansen passed for 200 yards and two touchdowns, while Brian Lockridge and Rodney Stewart both rushed for over 100 yards as Colorado erased a poor first half showing with a dominant second half performance in the Buffs’ 2010 home opener.

Before many of the 47,840 in attendance had settled into their seats, the Hawai’i Warriors set about making sure Buff fans did not forget the 52-7 rout handed to the Buffs by Cal seven days earlier. On the second play of the game, Hawai’i quarterback Bryant Moniz hit Kealoha Pilares on a crossing route which turned into an 80 yard gain. Jimmy Smith caught Pilares at the Colorado three yard line, but a Warrior score, and another Colorado debacle, seemed imminent.

Then Hawai’i did Colorado a huge favor.

The Warriors ran the ball.

A week after rushing for only ten yards against Army, the Warriors decided to run the ball against the Buffs. Three…

Buffs show imitation is the most sincere form of flattery

The 2010 Buff players had to wait.

The halftime ceremony honoring Alfred Williams’ selection as a member of the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2010 was running long. The 2010 Buff players were lined up behind Ralphie, ready to make their second half entrance onto Folsom Field, but Ralphie’s path around the stadium had yet to be cleared. Hundreds of young children, all wearing No. 94 jerseys in honor of Williams, along with a number of dignitaries on hand for the presentation – including fellow CU Hall of Famers Joe Romig and Dick Anderson – were still in Ralphie’s way.

As the Buffs waited, they heard the cheers for Williams.

As the Buffs waited, the sun, which had been as hidden from view in the first half as the Colorado offense, decided to make an appearance.

As the Buffs waited, a trio of F-18′s thundered their way over the stadium, bringing about yet another raucous cheer from a Buff home crowd anxious to have something for which to cheer.

“Do you get it now?”, I thought to myself as I saw the Buff players bunched up behind Ralphie,…

Alfred Williams – Hall of Famer

On May 26th, the College Football Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2010. There were fourteen names on the list, including those familiar to many college football fans – names like Desmond Howard (Michigan), Pat Tillman (Arizona State), Randy Cross (UCLA), Sam Cunningham (USC), and Mark Herrmann (Purdue), along with retired coaches Barry Alvarez (Wisconsin) and Gene Stallings (Texas A&M, Alabama).

There was also one former Colorado Buffalo, All-American linebacker Alfred Williams.

“I’m so proud and honored by this, but it’s a tribute to my teammates and coaches,” said Williams upon learning of his selection. “A lot of people deserve to go into the College Football Hall of Fame, but they select so few. So I am both humble and proud to represent all my teammates as the first to go in from our national championship team … Everyone knows how I feel about the University of Colorado and my love for the school.”

Colorado may be Williams’ first love today, but it wasn’t always that way …

“The University of Colorado wasn’t high on my list”

Williams was part of the 1987 recruiting class which included Eric Bieniemy, George Hemingway, Jay Leeuwenburg, Kanavis McGhee, Mike…

On September 11th, the Colorado Buffaloes were destroyed by the California Bears, 52-7. It was an embarrassing loss, one which the Buffs failed to, in the words of even the players, “show up”.

This Saturday, the Buffs will play their home opener against Hawai’i. Former Colorado All-American – and 2010 College Hall of Fame inductee – Alfred Williams will be honored.

The question CU fans will have as they enter Folsom Field for the first time in 2010 is:

Will the Buffs “show up” this week?

Here’s a look at how Colorado and Hawai’i stack up, using the categories Talent, Intangibles, Preparation/Schedule, and Statistics …

T – Talent

On offense, Hawai’i has talent at quarterback and at wide receiver. The Warriors are going to score against the Colorado defense, that is pretty much a given. The real issue is whether the Buffs can minimize the damage.

The Warriors are led by junior quarterback Bryant Moniz. In a career which has spanned one season plus two games – a total of ten starts - Moniz has already passed for more than 3,000 yards. If he wore the black-and-gold of Colorado, Moniz would already rank 11th on the Colorado all-time pass yardage list. In two games…

Fearless Forecasts

The Buffs let their fans down against Cal, that really cannot be debated.

But to let down the “Fearless Forecasts”?

Scotty McKnight ended last weekend’s 52-7 debacle eight yards shy of 2,000 for his career, leaving the Fearless Forecasts with a five-for-six record for the season. Still, the beat must go on, so here are this week’s “take-to-the-bank” predictions:

1) Colorado will exceed its points per game average … The Buffs have posted only 31 points thus far in 2010, a paltry 15.5 per game average. In two games in 2010, Hawaii has given up 77 points, or 38.5 points per game (good for 111th in the nation). Last season, Hawaii was scored on to the clip of 29.5 points per game. In seven games, the opposition surpassed the Buffs’ 2010 point output to date.  Suffice it to say, if the Buffs are hovering anywhere around their 2010 average, it will be a long day for Colorado fans …

2) Attendance for the Hawaii game will be the lowest in a home opener since 2002 … at least against a Division 1-AA opponent. In 2002, Colorado played before a crowd of 44,126 in the home opener…
