Wyoming – Throwbacks
// Sep 19 -
2009 Season
September 19th – Boulder Colorado 24, Wyoming 0
On a day when Washington, 0-12 in 2008, took out #3 USC (16-13), you knew that anything could happen.
The much-maligned Colorado defense held Wyoming to 230 yards of total offense in posting the first shutout for Colorado since the Buffs took out Miami (Ohio), 42-0, almost exactly two years ago.
The Buffs’ offense was not overwhelming, but was much more effective than it had been the first two games of 2009. Cody Hawkins hit on 17-of-31 passes for 175 yards, and Rodney Stewart rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Scotty McKnight had five catches for 77 yards, and had a timely fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Colorado, which had fallen behind by double digits in each of the first two games, turned the tables in game three. The Buffs took only 1:30 of game clock to take the first lead of the season. The eight-play, 69-yard drive was finished off in bizarre fashion. Demetrius Sumler, on first-and-ten at the Wyoming 17 yard line, took off for a fifteen yard gain, but fumbled the ball. Fortunately for Colorado fans, the fumble was recovered by wide receiver Scotty McKnight at the Wyoming two yard…

Throwbacks
For their game against the Wyoming Cowboys, the Buffs donned 1937 vintage jerseys (what? No leather helmets?). The uniforms were a dull gold with black numerals; the helmets and pants silver. It was a “throwback” weekend in Folsom Field, as the Buffs did what they used to do when they played Wyoming decades ago – dominate.
A few words about the vintage uniforms … Ugg-ahh-lee! Memo to marketing staff: First, thank you for not choosing to put CU fans through a 25th anniversary restoration of the baby blue uniforms from 1984 (sorry, make that “Colorado sky blue at 9,000 feet”). However, if you wanted to actually market and sell vintage uniforms, you might have been better served by going with a 20th anniversary replica of the 1989 jerseys (now, those were cool uniforms!). You might ponder this as you crate up the unsold 1937 jerseys for their “Goodwill Tour” of a country where football is actually soccer. (If you’re really interested, here is the link so that you can order your own “Throwback Jersey” – https://www.nmnathletics.com/sellnew/SellHome.dbml?&&&DB_OEM_ID=620&KEY=&DB_OEM_ID=600&DB_LANG=C&IN_SUBSCRIBER_CONTENT= – only $600.00 for the jersey and helmet – sorry, pants not included).
As for the game, the throwback to a defense which could…

By the Numbers
What does a 24-0 shutout do for a team which was ranked no higher than 100th in the nation in six statisitical categories?
Great things, apparently.
Now, after three weeks of play, the Buffs are only ranked in the bottom twenty in the nation in three statistical categories … yea! Granted, Colorado is still in the 100′s in rushing offense (106th – ouch!), rushing defense (104th – not completely unexpected) and pass efficiency defense (100th – yuck), but the Buffs have made progress in the areas of total defense (99th, up from 111th), scoring defense (78th, well up from the ranking of 107th a week ago), and sacks allowed (93rd, up from 104th). The Buffs also moved up in net punting (42nd, up significantly from 75th), pass defense (75th, up from 98th), and sacks (38th, up from 67th).
If it’s any consolation, there are only three categories in which a Big 12 North team leads the conference – pass efficiency defense (Kansas State), pass efficiency (Missouri), and sacks allowed (Iowa State).
Dare to dream – Colorado is just another shutout or two away from really making a statisical splash!

Hang in there, Buff fans, we may be in for a long season. I checked with the NCAA, and there are no mulligans, do-overs, “we weren’t ready yets”, or “just kiddings”. Colorado and their fans have to live with the 0-2 record, with very few (realistically) winnable games left on the 2009 schedule.
Fortunately, this Saturday gives the Buffs one last chance for redemption before taking on a much tougher stretch.
Here are this week’s “T.I.P.S.” …
T – Talent
Enjoy this Saturday, as it will be the last week in a month that the Buffs will be the team with the most talent on the field. For all of our despondency, it is important to remember that Wyoming is coming off a 4-8 season, with a new quarterback and a new offense.
In 2008, the Cowboys were ranked 108th in total offense. After two games of the 2009 season, the Cowboys are ranked 76th, with 707 yards of total offense (five yards ahead of the Buffs, who are ranked 78th with 702 yards). Quarterback Robert Benjamin has completed 24-of-52 passes for 207 yards in the first two games, rushing for an additional 85 yards. The rushing duties have been…

#11 Colorado at Minnesota – September 19, 1992
In 1992, the Colorado Buffaloes were looking for a “four-peat” as Big Eight champions. In 1991, the Buffs had shared the title with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, with both teams finishing with 6-0-1 conference marks. The 1992 season opened with two convincing wins, 37-17 over Colorado State, and 57-38 over Baylor. Up next was a Minnesota team which the Buffs had dismantled, 58-0, in 1991. The Golden Gophers were coming off of a 3-8 season, and had dropped their season opener to San Jose State. It looked like an easy win for the 11th-ranked Buffs.
If it had been easy, would we be talking about it still ……?

Wyoming Trivia
- Colorado v. Wyoming. The Buffs have a 23-2-1 record against the Cowboys, the best winning percentage against any opponent (90.4%) the Buffs have played at least 15 times (CU is 12-1 against Arizona, a 92.3 winning percentage). The teams have only played five times, however, since 1947, with the Buffs holding a 4-1 advantage in those games. The last game between the two schools was a 20-19 win for CU in 1997 (Ben Kelly!). The last Wyoming win (in fact the only win other for the Cowboys other than a 6-0 win in 1935), was a 24-10 win in Boulder in 1982.
- The Wyoming passing game in 2008 made the Buffs look like Texas Tech. The Cowboys struggled to put up 117.7 yards/game, ranked 114th out of 119 teams (and four of the five teams behind Wyoming were the three service academies and Georgia Tech, where Paul Johnson moved his rush-oriented offense from Navy).
- The rushing game for the Cowboys, though, was ranked 34th in the nation in 2008. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the rushing game graduated. Both Devin Moore (1st all-time in rushing yardage) and Wynel Seldon (3rd all-time)…
