Missouri – One Last Record

// Oct 31 -

October 31st – Boulder          Missouri 36, Colorado 17

Missouri sacked Colorado quarterback Tyler Hansen eight times and forced four turnovers, racing out to a 33-0 lead en route to a 36-17 victory. The Buffs out-scored the Tigers 14-0 in the third quarter to make it interesting, but four possessions with the score 33-17 netted two turnovers on downs, an interception, and a punt, as Colorado fell to 2-6, 1-3 on the season. A homecoming crowd of 45,634, the smallest crowd of the season, was on hand to witness a fourth straight win for Missouri in the series.

Missouri had out-scored Colorado 113-10 the past two seasons, and, in the first half of the 2009 game, it appeared as if the scores of 55-10 and 58-0 were mere preludes to the hurt the Tigers were going to put on the Buffs in 2009. The Tigers took the opening kickoff, and smartly marched 80 yards down the field. The Colorado defense did force two third downs – 3rd-and-two at the Missouri 28 yard line, and third-and-nine at the MU 47, giving Buff fans hope (after all, Colorado was ranked 19th in the nation in 3rd-down defense, at 32%; and was even better at…

 One Last Record …

If you were with us last week, you know that I am a big fan of football statistics, particularly Colorado statistics. You also know that it has pained me as, over the past three-plus seasons, the Dan Hawkins’ regime has made a mockery of what has been built over the past twenty seasons. There are a number of statistical categories which Dave Plati, Associate Athletic Director / Sports Information, has been pushing in his media game day releases, all of which have been going south:

When Dan Hawkins took over, the Buffs had the 8th-best record in the nation since 1989 – now Colorado is at 23rd, and falling;

When Dan Hawkins took over, the Buffs had the 8th-best road record in the nation since 1988 – now Colorado is 13th, and falling (fast);

When Dan Hawkins took over, the Buffs had been ranked in over 70% of the polls since 1989 – now Colorado is hovering near 50%, and falling.

Dave Plati also charts Colorado in comparison to the rest of the Big 12 with respect to conference road wins, intra-division records, and inter-division records since 1996.

Guess which way the Buffs have been moving since 2006?…

News - Colorado hasn’t played on Halloween since 1992, and hasn’t played at home on Halloween since 1970.

Not News – Colorado has stunk it up against Missouri the last two seasons.

Colorado is hosting Missouri this Saturday morning, with kickoff at 11:30 MT. The Homecoming game represents the first time that Colorado has played on Halloween since 1992.

[The last game Colorado played on October 31st was a true nightmare. No.8 Colorado played in Lincoln against No. 8 Nebraska (no, that's not a typo - the teams were tied in the polls). Both teams had aspirations of a Big Eight title and national recognition. The Buffs were mauled that night, 52-7, the first conference loss for Colorado since 1988 (a run of 23-0-2). Nebraska went to win its first Big Eight title in four years. The Buffs finished the 1992 season with a 9-2-1 record after falling to Syracuse, 26-22, in the Fiesta Bowl]

Colorado’s play against Missouri the past two seasons has been ghoulish, falling to Missouri by scores of 55-10 and 58-0 in the last two meetings. The latter loss snapped the Buffs’ 242-game scoring streak, the 9th-longest in NCAA history. This week, the Buffs have been talking about…

Missouri – Trivia

 - Missouri went 10-4 in 2008, winning ten games or more in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history (and only the fifth time ever). The highlight of the season was a 52-17 stomping of Nebraska in Lincoln, the first win for Missouri on the road in the series since 1976.

- Even with the Tigers’ stellar 2008 record, bear this in mind – Last season, Missouri beat only two FBS teams with winning records, Nebraska and Northwestern (a 30-23 win in the Alamo Bowl).

- In 2008, Missouri had eight players on defense who received all-conference honors, yet against the Big 12 South powers (Texas, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State), the Tigers went 0-3, and gave up 146 points.

- After defeating Kansas, 36-28, on November 24, 2007, Missouri claimed into the #1 ranking in the Associated Press poll for only the second time in school history.  Just like the first trip to the summit, the stay was short-lived.  The following week the Tigers fell to Oklahoma, 38-17, in the Big 12 championship game, to fall out of the top spot.  A 38-7 win over Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl secured for Missouri…

Hawkins takes responsibility

Something new came from head coach Dan Hawkins Sunday – accepting responsibility. With the Buffs at 2-6, and all but guaranteed a fourth straight non-winning season, Dan Hawkins says its his fault the Buffs have not been better prepared. “It’s all on me,” said Hawkins. “Ultimately, that’s what it comes down to. No question. That’s the nature of it. I don’t shirk that at all.” Thing is, I have been waiting all season for these words. In my mind, Dan Hawkins has, in fact, been “shirking” responsibility. There has been mulitiple “we’re thisclose” quotes, and many times we’ve heard about the youth and inexperience on the team. Glad to hear that the head coach is accepting his role in the Buffs’ demise.

Another quote Sunday, though, was disturbing. When asked about how the Buffs have been playing from behind all season – Colorado has been out-scored 64-27 in the first quarter in 2009 – Dan Hawkins said that he has been trying his best. “I’ve tried to pull more rabbits out of the hat in this deal than I’ve done in 25 years of coaching,” said Hawkins.

Damn.

So this is the best we can…
