#2 Texas – “The Buffs Shall Rise Again”

// Oct 10 -

October 10, 2009           #2 Texas 38, Colorado 14

Colorado jumped out to 14-3 lead over 2nd-ranked Texas, but special teams miscues, penalties, and missed opportunities by the offense allowed the Longhorns to run away with a 38-14 victory. In less a quarter of playing time in the second half, Texas scored on a blocked punt, an interception return, and a punt return, as the Buffs fell to 1-4 in losing to the Longhorns for the fifth consecutive time.

For Colorado fans, the game in Austin began better than even the most ardent of supporters could have hoped. Brian Lockridge brought the opening kickoff back to the 34, and the Buffs went to work. An eight-play, 66-yard drive gave Colorado the early lead. The Buffs converted a third-and-two with a 14-yard pass from Cody Hawkins to fullback Jake Behrens (with a 15-yard facemask penalty tacked onto the completion). Later, on third-and-21 at the Texas 25, Hawkins completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to tight end Patrick Devenny. The over-the-shoulder catch by Devenny was reminiscent of his touchdown catch against West Virginia in 2008 – the last time the Buffs defeated a ranked team.

Then it was the Longhorns’ turn. In each of the Buffs…

Friday Night Lights – CU at the Game takes in Texas High school football

October 9, 2009          Bastrop Bears 24, Westlake Chaparrals 21

Junior quarterback Josiah Monroe put up 335 total yards of offense in leading the undefeated Bastrop Bears to a 24-21 road win over Westlake. Monroe threw for three scores, including a 66-yard pass to Josh Taylor late in the fourth quarter to give Bastrop the lead. A last-minute attempt to tie the score for the Chaparrals fell short when cornerback Bernard Blake intercepted a pass from Westlake quarterback Tanner Price.

With the win, Bastrop is, in the words of the Austin American-Statesman, in the “25-5A driver’s seat”. The Bears are now 6-0 for the first time since 1998, and, more importantly, 3-0 in District 25-5A play. The home-standing Westlake Chaparrals, meanwhile, fell to 4-2, 2-1 in league play.

Okay, so you really aren’t interested in the District 25 5-A standings, but, rest assured, there are many, many fans in the greater Austin area who are.

Our adventure began innocently enough. We had no set plans for our Friday night in Austin, other than to check in on a few CU Alumni Association events at the hotel…

More on Tyler Hansen, starting quarterback

Last Monday, when the internet was full of consternation about the continued mediocre play of the Colorado offense, there was a discussion taking place in the Hansen household. Son Tyler was talking with his father, Rick, a high school football coach and former starting quarterback (San Diego State, 1978-82), about the option of pulling Tyler’s red-shirt at mid-season for the second consecutive year.

Earlier that evening, Tyler had been asked by offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau to stay late after a quarterbacks’ meeting. “He said, ‘close the door,’ ” Hansen said. “He said, ‘you know what I’m going to tell you.’ Once he sat me down, I knew. Once he gave me that look, it was pretty much the exact same thing (former offensive coordinator Mark) Helfrich had last year.”

The question son Tyler had for father Rick, though, was whether burning his red-shirt was a good idea. Rick told his son to seize the opportunity. “He’s been around football enough to know that when you get the opportunity to play, especially against Texas or some other team like that, you take it,” said Hansen. “That was the biggest thing. Once he said…

And the Buffs shall Rise Again!

Despite the three non-offensive scores given up against Texas (the most given up by any team in FBS in one game this season - and the Buffs pulled off the trifecta in less than a quarter of playing time), there was more to the 38-14 loss to the Longhorns than the casual observer would assume. After reading the inscription at a memorial on the statehouse grounds in Austin, I am pleased to report to the Buff Nation that victory would have/could have/ and, by rights, should have - been ours.

The Longhorns didn’t just fight fair.

Let me explain …

But for about a quarter and a half of football Saturday, Brad, Randy, and I had a good time this weekend in Austin. We checked out a high school game between two top 5-A schools in Austin (a full report on our adventurous excursion to witness “Friday Night Lights” for ourselves will be posted Monday night). We toured the UT campus, 6th street, and the state capitol. It was on the grounds of the state house where we encountered several memorials. There was one for the Texas Rangers, one for the Alamo defenders … and one for the…

T.I.P.S. For Texas

How can the 1-3 Buffs stay with the 4-0, and 2nd-ranked Longhorns?

For inspiration, I went back to my preview for the 2007 game against #3 Oklahoma. The Buffs were in marginally better shape in 2007, coming into the game with a 2-2 record. Still, this was the game Colorado team which had gone 2-10 the season before, so there was little reason to believe that the Buffs would give the Sooners a game.

In the preview, entitled “Five Steps to an Upset!  Okay, would you believe five ways to keep it close”, I outlined five factors which would have to fall the Buffs’ way:

1) Control time of possession;

2) Special teams must have a great day;

3) Reverse the turnovers (the Buffs were a minus-six in turnovers through the first four games of 2007);

4) Control emotions early (Oklahoma had a first half scoring margin of 143-27); and

5) No long plays (The Sooners already had 12 plays of over 40 yards – in four games).

Not bad. The Buffs did as instructed, and pulled out an unlikely 27-24 upset. Any chance that lightning will strike twice, and that the Buffs will pull off a similar miracle…

  Texas  Trivia

 Texas opened the 2009 season ranked 2nd in the preseason poll. The last time the Longhorns opened as high came in 2005, when Texas went on to win the national championship. The top ten ranking was the ninth in ten seasons opening in the top ten (with the lone exception coming in 2008, when the Longhorns started the season ranked 11th).

 Texas has won four national championships – 1963, 1969, 1970, and 2004.  The head coach for the first three titles was Hall of Fame member Darrell Royal.  Royal went 89-17-2 between 1961-70, and the Longhorns won 76% of his games (167-47-5) during his tenure from 1957-76.  What Texas fans try and forget: Darrell Royal was a Sooner!  Royal was an All-American quarterback for rival Oklahoma (1946-‘49).

 Famous Darrell Royal quotes:

“Only three things can happen when you throw the ball, and two of them are bad”;

“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity”; and

“When you get to the endzone, act like you’ve been there before”.

 In 1969, during the 100th anniversary season for college football, Texas played Arkansas in what was (at least until Oklahoma/Nebraska two years later), the “Game of the Century”.  Ranked…

October 10thColorado – best game on this date

While 2009 Colorado recruits Zach Grossnickle, DaVaughn Thornton, and Quintin Hildreth may take umbrage at the fact that CU is 2-0 against their alma mater, Denver East High School, the Buffs have had more important victories on October 10th.

#13 Colorado at Miami (Fla.) – October 10, 1975

The week before the Buffs played Miami, the 19th-ranked Buffs gave #1 Oklahoma all it could handle, falling 21-20 in Norman. CU head coach Bill Mallory decided to go for a game-tying extra point after the…
