@ Iowa State* – Reality Check

November 14th – @ Iowa State           Iowa State 17, Colorado 10

Colorado had it’s opportunities, but four trips inside the Iowa State red zone netted three points, as the Buffs fell in Ames, 17-10. Falling to 3-7 on the season, the Buffs guaranteed themselves a fourth straight losing season for only the second time in school history. Colorado out-gained Iowa State, 390 yards to 310, but three turnovers, 110 yards in penalties, and missed opportunities doomed the Buffs to a third straight loss in Ames for – you guessed it – only the second time in school history (1979, 1981, 1983).

A low scoring game was certainly in the offing early, as both teams generated negative yardage in their opening drives. On Iowa State’s second drive, the Buffs had the Cyclones backed up, facing a third-and-15 at the ISU 12-yard line. A face mask penalty on the Buffs, though, kept the drive alive – and set the tone for the day. Iowa State took advantage, piecing together a nine-play, 83-yard drive to take a lead the Cyclones would not surrender. Quarterback Austen Arnaud hit Marquis Hamilton from seven yards out as Iowa State scored in the first quarter for the first time in five…

“T.I.P.S.” for Iowa State

Saturday, Colorado seeks to post back-to-back wins for the first time since opening the 2008 season with a 3-0 record, traveling to Ames, Iowa, to take on the 5-5 Iowa State Cyclones. Seen as potentially being one of the Buffs’ best chances at a road victory back in August, Colorado needs to win out just to become bowl eligible. For the Cyclones, the math is much easier – defeat Colorado, and a bowl bid for the first time since 2005 is in the offing. Jack Trice Stadium holds up to 55,000, with a crowd of 40,000 to 45,000 expected.

Can the Buffs pull off their first road win in over two years? Can Colorado make the trip to Stillwater next Thursday relevant? Can the Buffs keep the Iowa State offense from regaining its early season form?

Let’s find out … Here are this week’s “T.I.P.S.” …

T – Talent

For the first time since the Kansas State game, and perhaps for only the second time since the Wyoming game, Colorado will field a more talented squad. Iowa State is 5-5, but has struggled since non-conference wins over North Dakota State, Kent State, and Army propelled the…

Two more commitments!

The long-dormant 2010 Colorado recruiting class has sprung to life, as two more verbal commitments have reportedly been secured. In addition to the two New Orleans teammates (quarterback Munchie Legaux and wide receiver Keenan Canty) and California cornerback Jered Bell (stories on all three, below), Scout.com is now listing two more players on the Buffs’ list of commitments.

First up is tight end Justin Favors, from Trotwood-Madison High outside Dayton, Ohio. Favors is 6′3″, 228 pounds, and runs a 4.84 40. Favors made his official visit last weekend, and committed after returning home to Ohio. Still, Favors is considered a “soft verbal”, as he may take other recruiting trips. “Right now, I’m really focusing on Colorado,” Favors told BuffStampede.com, “but I might take some more visits and still see what’s going on.” Favors is only considered a one-star recruit by Scout.com, while getting two stars from Rivals.com. Still, Favors does have offers from a number of  schools, including Cincinnati, Syracuse, and Louisville from the Big East.

Favors would help fill one of the few voids being left by the 2009 senior class. There are no fewer than four senior tight ends on the Colorado roster, so…

 Iowa State Trivia

 - Iowa State won its first two games of 2008, proceeding to lose its last 10.  The 2008 squad tied the 1994 and 2003 teams as the only teams in school history to have an in-season 10 game losing streak.

-  With a 5-5 record to date in 2009, Iowa State has accumulated seven wins since the start of the 2008 season, the only school in the Big 12 with fewer victories than Colorado (with eight) over the past two seasons.

- Despite the fact that Iowa State has had a long history of coaches leaving with losing records, Gene Chizik gets the “bottom of the barrel” award, leaving for Auburn with a .208 winning percentage (5-19). He was also the first coach in 50 years not to coach at least four seasons in Ames.

- Hard as it may be to believe, Iowa State has actually won seven of the past 12 games in the Cy-Hawk Trophy rivalry game with Iowa.

- The Buffs have dominated the rivalry with the Cyclones more than they have against any other Big 12 rival. CU leads the all-time series, 48-14-1, including a run of 16 consecutive wins between…
